Myofascial Cupping
Cupping therapy is an ancient form of alternative therapy in which a therapist puts special suction cups on your skin for a few minutes to create suction. It is used for many purposes, including to help with pain, inflammation, blood flow, relaxation and well-being, and as a type of deep-tissue massage.
It dates back to ancient Egyptian, Chinese, and Middle Eastern cultures.

A vacuum is created inside the cup which is placed on specific points of the body to release localised acute and chronic tension and help to increase blood flow to the area.

Areas of musculoskeletal tension or congestion are located using massage techniques, suction cups are then applied on an affected area and moved over the surface in a gliding motion, or possibly put on a fascial adhesion or trigger point for a short time to reduce and eliminate it.

A myofascial cupping treatment uses a combination of massage strokes and negative pressure to lift, separate, and stretch underlying soft tissues. Cupping is typically applied on the neck, shoulders, back, upper and lower legs and arms.
The recipient can often feel a light pinching sensation under the cups, followed by a negative or ‘lifting’ sensation around the area being treated. Following treatment patients often feel much lighter and more relaxed.
Benefits of Myofascial Cupping
Increased circulation
Increased joint range of motion
Reduced muscle tension
Increased Lymphatic drainage (localised detoxification)
Increased connective tissue mobility

Part one of the beneficial effects of massage.
- massage dilates the blood vessels improving circulation and relieving congestion throughout the body.
- massage stimulates the lymph system (the 'cleaning' system) and hastens the elimination of wastes and toxic debris.
- massage increases blood supply and nutrition to muscles without adding to their load of toxic lactic acid, which is produced through voluntary muscle contraction. Therefore helping to prevent build up of harmful 'fatigue' products resulting from injury or strenuous exercise.
-massage improves muscle tone and helps prevent or delay muscular atrophy.
- massage can have a sedative, stimulating or even exhausting effect on the nervous system depending on the type and length of massage treatment given.

Which muscle is that?
This is a very common question during a massage treatment, especially when one particular area is painful. As you can see from the diagram there are many muscles.. layers of muscles and muscles and tendons crossing over each other at different angles. So it's not so important to know the name of that muscle but more the understanding of what is the function of that muscle and how it is connected to other structures around it. Then becoming aware of what may cause this muscle or muscle group to tighten up causing the discomfort and to have the knowledge of how to take the stress off of the area and how to stretch or strengthen the muscle or muscle group.
