🌟 2024 Highlights (Part 4) 🌟

As we close out 2024, we're thrilled to share the final set of achievements from this remarkable year. None of this would have been possible without the dedication and hard work of every GHTM member. Here's to celebrating our collective success and looking forward to an even brighter future in 2025!

10. 🌍 This November, the International Seminar on Primary Health Care in CPLP Member States, co-hosted by GHTM & Instituto de Higiene e Medicina Tropical - NOVA, CONASS and CPLP, brought together experts to discuss advancements and strategies for improving primary health care across Portuguese-speaking countries. https://ghtm.ihmt.unl.pt/international-seminar-on-primary-health-care-in-cplp-member-states/

12. 🧪 This year, we worked tirelessly to review and learn from our experiences between 2018-2023, resulting in a strong plan for the next 5 years and securing funding for 9 permanent research positions under FCT Tenure program.

🌟 2024 Highlights (Part 3) 🌟

As we continue to celebrate the achievements of 2024, we're excited to share three more standout moments that highlight our commitment to global health, research, and collaboration.

7. 🤝 The Lusophone Platform for Clinical Research and Biomedical Innovation (PLICIB), a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing scientific competitiveness in Portuguese-speaking African countries (PALOP), was launched on June 26. Instituto de Higiene e Medicina Tropical - NOVA leads its scientific coordination, aiming to foster collaborative research and innovation, strengthen clinical research capabilities, and promote biomedical advancements in these regions. https://plicib.aicib.pt/

8. 🧬 Our experts have provided crucial insights into the study and management of mpox, emphasizing the importance of public health strategies and the detection of asymptomatic cases to control the outbreak effectively. This month, a study on concurrent mpox outbreaks in Africa was published in The Lancet. This work is an international collaboration featuring contributions from GHTM researcher Ana B. 9. ✍️ MulhereSTROP continues to empower women scientists from Portuguese-speaking countries, enhancing their research and publication skills. This February, a scientific article writing workshop was held in Maputo, Mozambique, with 15 participants, financed by the Elsevier Foundation.

Continuing our celebration of 2024, we're thrilled to share more standout achievements from our R&D unit. This year has been filled with impactful collaborations and strides in global public health.

4. 🤝 From November 4 to 7, 2024, we partnered with the inaugural Tropical Summit at the Lisbon Congress Center, where global leaders, experts, and researchers discussed health and sustainable development in tropical regions, featuring key sessions on Planetary Health, Global Health, and Tropical Medicine. https://ghtm.ihmt.unl.pt/highlights-tropical-summit

5. 🌐 The WHO Collaborating Centre for Health Workforce Policy and Planning has been redesignated until 2028, reaffirming its commitment to advancing global health workforce policy and planning, particularly in Portuguese-speaking countries and Europe. https://whoccworkforce.ihmt.unl.pt/pt/

As we wrap up 2024, we're excited to share some of the standout achievements from our R&D unit. This year has been a remarkable journey, thanks to the dedication and hard work of our talented team.

🌄 IMPACT STORIES: Studying health determinants in migrant populations

Professor Maria do Rosário Martins, together with PhD students Iolanda Alves and Marisa Conceição, tell us about the work focusing on the health trajectories of over 1,200 children in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, including both immigrant and native populations, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Their dedication is helping bridge crucial gaps in health data and impacting health policies and interventions for vulnerable communities.

🔬 BIOTROP at Round Table on Biological Culture Collections in Coimbra: Our own Ana Paula Arez, Coordinator of the Biobank at GHTM | IHMT-NOVA, contributed to a vital conversation on the role of biological culture collections in society and their future.

🌍 First Tropical Summit in Lisbon: From November 4 to 7, 2024, GHTM & IHMT-NOVA proudly partnered in the summit focused on “Foreseeing Answers to Global Challenges,” bringing together experts to tackle pressing global issues.

📊 Session on Zero-Dose Children in Mozambique: Assucênio Chissaque led an insightful session on the levels and trends of zero-dose children in Mozambique, shedding light on critical public health challenges.

🗣️ 2024 Lusophone Public Health Conference: Held on November 11 and 12 at the Lisbon Congress Center, our members showcased their dedication to public health in the CPLP space with oral presentations, posters, and key sessions.
