🕯️This Sunday marks International Overdose Awareness Day.

Over 7 500 people lost their lives to overdose in the EU in 2023 — rising to around 8 100 when Türkiye and Norway are included. Most victims were men in their late thirties or early forties and most cases involved multiple substances.

In the run-up to the day, we’ve updated our FAQs on drug drug-induced deaths in Europe. The resource highlights growing concerns around co***ne, nitazenes and polysubstance use and provides clear answers based on the latest data from 30 countries. The FAQs also include updates on treatment and harm reduction measures to reduce these premature and preventable deaths.

Today is World Hepatitis Day.

ℹ️ Viral hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver that can lead to severe liver disease and liver cancer. Among people who inject drugs, hepatitis C carries the highest disease burden. Hepatitis B is also more prevalent in this group than in the general population.

Eliminating viral hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030 is a target set under the UN Sustainable Development Goal on Health.

📊 Our viral hepatitis elimination barometer tracks 11 key indicators to assess national progress in this area.

While some countries are making headway, many are still falling short of elimination goals. Achieving elimination targets will require increased investment in harm reduction services, as well as testing and treatment for viral hepatitis.
