🔎 O terceiro dia da 2nd Botton Champalimaud International Pancreatic Cancer Conference (BCIPCC) continuou a expandir horizontes!

🥼🩺 Sessões sobre o microambiente tumoral pancreático, investigação translacional e ensaios clínicos destacaram como as descobertas no laboratório estão a redefinir as estratégias clínicas. 🤝 A colaboração entre a investigação fundamental e clínica foi um tema dominante nas discussões, reforçando a ideia de que a compreensão da biologia tumoral é fundamental para alcançar melhores resultados.

💡 O futuro da cirurgia robótica pancreática, técnicas cirúrgicas minimamente invasivas e a preservação de órgãos foi também debatido.

🍽️ O dia terminou com um jantar que reuniu os participantes num ambiente informal, promovendo o fortalecimento dos laços criados durante este evento.

Esperamos que os participantes tenham saído inspirados pela sinergia entre a ciência e a medicina que se está a consolidar na 2nd BCIPCC e ansiosos pelo último dia da conferência. 🙌

🔎 The third day of the 2nd Botton Champalimaud International Pancreatic Cancer Conference (BCIPCC) continued to push boundaries!

🥼🩺 Sessions on pancreatic tumour microenvironment, translational research and clinical trials highlighted how laboratory discoveries are reshaping clinical strategies. Also, 🤝 collaboration between basic and clinical research echoed in discussions, reinforcing the idea that understanding tumour biology is key to unlocking better outcomes.

💡 Future pathways in robotic pancreatic and minimally invasive surgeries and organ preservation were also in debate.

🍽️ The day ended with a conference dinner that brought together participants to keep on building bridges in an informal setting.

We hope the participants left inspired by the synergy between science and medicine taking shape at the 2nd BCIPCC and looking forward to the last day of the conference. 🙌

O segundo dia da 2ª edição da Botton-Champalimaud International Pancreatic Cancer Conference (BCIPCC) deu o mote para um encontro ambicioso e colaborativo! 🙌

🔎 As sessões da manhã trouxeram profundidade científica, com discussões sobre o como responder ao adenocarcinoma ductal pancreático, diagnósticos e inteligência artificial e radiologia. Foram também apresentadas novas iniciativas de investigação com o lançamento do “Naming Campus 2025”.

🙌 O dia reuniu clínicos, cientistas e tecnologistas para explorar como a investigação multidisciplinar está a acelerar a deteção precoce e a melhorar a precisão do tratamento no cancro do pâncreas.

The second day of the 2nd Botton Champalimaud International Pancreatic Cancer Conference (BCIPCC) set the tone for an ambitious and collaborative meeting! 🙌

🔎 The morning sessions brought to the stage scientific depth, featuring discussions on targeting pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, diagnostics and artificial intelligence & radiology. New research initiatives were also introduced with the launch of the “Naming Campus 2025”.

🙌 The day brought together clinicians, scientists, and technologists to explore how multidisciplinary research is accelerating early detection and improving treatment precision in pancreatic cancer.

E terminou o mês rosa! 🩷

Neste mês de outubro, a Champalimaud Foundation / Fundação Champalimaud juntou-se à campanha internacional Outubro Rosa para sensibilizar para a prevenção e o tratamento do cancro da mama.

Reunimos doentes, famílias, médicos, profissionais de saúde e investigadores e organizámos um programa diversificado que incluiu:

💻 O lançamento de uma nova página no LinkedIn
✍️ Um mural interativo e informativo

Discutimos vários temas importantes desde 👩‍⚕️ o processo de diagnóstico do cancro da mama, nomeadamente a importância do rastreio personalizado e como as novas tecnologias de imagem estão a melhorar a deteção precoce 🏃‍♀️ao papel da atividade física como terapia para o tratamento do cancro; e acabámos com 📖 uma história inspiradora de recuperação, partilhada através da apresentação de um livro escrito por uma doente com cancro da mama.

And that’s a pink wrap! 🩷

This October, the Champalimaud Foundation joined the international Pink October campaign to raise awareness about breast cancer prevention and care.

Bringing together patients, families, clinicians, healthcare professionals and researchers, we hosted a diverse programme that included:

📍 On-site sessions
💻 The launch of a new LinkedIn showcase page
✍️ An interactive and informative mural

We went from discussions on 👩‍⚕️breast cancer diagnosis, namely the importance of personalised screening and how emerging imaging technologies are improving early detection; to 🏃‍♀️the role of physical activity as a complementary therapy for cancer treatment and ended with 📖 an inspiring recovery story, shared through the presentation of a book written by a breast cancer patient.

Thank you to everyone who joined us during this Pink October! Together, we share knowledge and health, this month and beyond.

🦠 Micróbios para jantar. Quem quer?

Nova investigação da Fundação Champalimaud revela que a falta de nutrientes essenciais pode alterar a expressão genética 🧬 e afinar a perceção 🧠, ajudando os animais a encontrar as leveduras ricas em proteínas 🍞 e as bactérias intestinais 🧫 de que precisam.

Quando privadas de aminoácidos essenciais, as moscas-da-fruta 🪰 desenvolvem um olfato surpreendentemente apurado 👃, que as guia não apenas em direção à comida, mas também a bactérias benéficas presentes em alimentos fermentados – micróbios que apoiam o metabolismo e a sobrevivência em períodos de carência nutricional.

Ao seguirem o olfato até aos micróbios certos, as moscas recrutam as bactérias como aliadas 🤝 em tempos difíceis – um comportamento que pode até refletir a nossa própria atração por alimentos fermentados como o iogurte ou o kimchi.

🦠 Microbes for dinner, anyone?

New research from the Champalimaud Foundation reveals that a shortage of key nutrients can change gene expression 🧬 and tune perception 🧠 to help animals find the protein-rich yeast 🍞 and gut bacteria 🧫 that they need.

When deprived of essential amino acids, fruit flies 🪰 develop a surprisingly refined sense of smell 👃 that guides them not just towards food, but towards beneficial bacteria living in fermented foods – microbes that support metabolism and survival during nutrient stress.

By following their noses to the right microbes, flies recruit bacteria as allies 🤝 in tough times – a behaviour that may even echo our own attraction to fermented foods like yoghurt or kimchi.

E terminou o ⚪ !

De 15 a 17 de outubro, a Fundação Champalimaud acolheu a edição de 2025 do Champalimaud Research Symposium, que abordou o tema “Neuro-Cybernetics at Scale”, recebendo quase 3️⃣0️⃣ oradores, incluindo 4️⃣ keynotes, e mais de 3️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ participantes de todo o 🌍.

From 15 to 17 October, the Champalimaud Foundation hosted the 2025 edition of the international Champalimaud Research Symposium, under the theme “Neuro-Cybernetics at Scale” and welcomed nearly 3️⃣0️⃣ presenters, including 4️⃣ keynote speakers, and over 3️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ participants from across the 🌍.

🔎➰ 🤖 This year’s meeting brought together leading researchers in experimental neuroscience, robotics, machine learning, control theory, and theoretical neuroscience to explore how behaviour emerges from complex feedback loops linking brains, bodies, and environments.

🧠 Atualmente, psicadélicos como o MDMA, a cetamina, a esketamina e a psilocibina estão a ganhar força como tratamentos para a depressão grave, com alguns deles já a serem autorizados para uso médico, tanto nos EUA como na Europa (incluindo Portugal). Ao mesmo tempo, também na Europa, o seu uso recreativo constitui uma preocupação crescente.

🧠 Today, psychedelics such as MDMA, ketamine, esketamine, and psilocybin are gaining traction as real treatments for severe depression, and some of them have already been authorised for medical use in both in the US and Europe (including Portugal). At the same time, and namely in Europe, their recreational use is a growing concern.

O terceiro e último dia do ⚪ trouxe discussões sobre o tema “Modelos e robôs” 🤖!

Contámos com dois oradores principais: Eva Dyer, que partilhou uma visão ousada sobre a neurociência à escala, e Auke Ijspeert, que explorou a neuromecânica da locomoção animal utilizando robôs e simulações 🦾

O “Futuro da Neurocibernética” foi também abordado num painel de discussão com Joe Paton, Adrienne Fairhall, Eva Dyer, Jesse Marshall e Sean Escola, moderado por Memming Park. Discutiram: como devemos organizar e concentrar os nossos esforços colectivos para compreender a inteligência à escala? 🧠💡🤖🦾

Terminando com uma de entrega de prémios aos nossos melhores pósteres e palestras selecionadas, um passeio de barco no rio Tejo, e um incrível jantar e festa de despedida, o CRSy25 foi repleto de momentos felizes!

The third and last day of ⚪ brought insightful discussions on the topic “Models and robots” 🤖!

We counted with two keynote speakers: Eva Dyer, sharing a bold vision for neuroscience at scale, and Auke Ijspeert, exploring the neuromechanics of animal locomotion using robots and simulations 🦾

The “Future of Neurocybernetics” was also addressed in a panel discussion with Joe Paton, Adrienne Fairhall, Eva Dyer, Jesse Marshall and Sean Escola, moderated by Memming Park. They discussed: how should we organise and focus our collective efforts to understand intelligence at scale? 🧠💡🤖🦾

Ending with an award ceremony for our best posters and selected talks, a boat tour on the Tagus river, and an amazing farewell dinner and party, the CRSy25 was full of happy moments!
