🖋️ A Fundação Champalimaud e a Universidade Católica Portuguesa assinaram um acordo estratégico para reforçar a investigação biomédica em Portugal.

🤝 Como primeiro passo desta parceria, o Católica Biomedical Research Centre irá instalar na Fundação Champalimaud, em Lisboa, a sua atividade de investigação fundamental em biomedicina, aproximando investigadores, estudantes e infraestruturas científicas avançadas. Esta iniciativa envolverá até 200 investigadores e um investimento conjunto de 5 milhões de euros para reforço de infraestruturas laboratoriais e aquisição de equipamento científico.

🖋️ The Champalimaud Foundation and Universidade Católica Portuguesa have signed a strategic agreement to strengthen biomedical research in Portugal.

🤝 As a first step, the Católica Biomedical Research Centre will establish its fundamental biomedical research activities at the Champalimaud Foundation, bringing together researchers, students and advanced scientific infrastructure in a collaborative environment. This initiative will involve up to 200 researchers and a joint investment of €5 million to support new laboratory infrastructure and advanced scientific equipment.

🧠 Pode o cérebro sentir o cancro – e influenciar a sua progressão?

Uma equipa interdisciplinar global que inclui Henrique Veiga-Fernandes, do Laboratório de Imunofiosiologia na Fundação Champalimaud, vai receber até 25 milhões de dólares do Cancer Grand Challenges para explorar uma das fronteiras menos estudadas da oncologia: como o cérebro e o sistema nervoso interagem com os tumores.

O consórcio, InteroCANCEption, liderado pelo The Francis Crick Institute, irá investigar se o cérebro consegue detetar o crescimento tumoral e se os sinais enviados de volta podem suprimir ou, em alguns casos, favorecer a progressão do cancro 🔁.

🧬 Ao considerar o cancro como uma doença de todo o corpo🧍inserida em redes neurais e imunitárias, a equipa vai explorar se a modulação da atividade neural ⚡poderá abrir caminho a novas abordagens terapêuticas.

Financiado pela Cancer Research UK e pelo National Cancer Institute dos EUA, através da iniciativa Cancer Grand Challenges, este é o primeiro prémio deste prestigiado programa internacional atribuído a um grupo de investigação numa instituição portuguesa 🇵🇹.

🧠 Can the brain sense cancer – and influence how it progresses?

A global interdisciplinary team including Henrique Veiga-Fernandes from the Immunophysiology Lab at the Champalimaud Foundation has been awarded up to $25 million by Cancer Grand Challenges to tackle one of the least explored frontiers in oncology: how the brain and nervous system interact with tumours.

The consortium, InteroCANCEption, led by The Francis Crick Institute, will investigate whether the brain can detect tumour growth and whether signals sent back from the brain may suppress or, in some cases, support cancer progression 🔁.

🧬 By reframing cancer as a whole-body🧍disease embedded in neural and immune networks, the team will explore whether modulating neural activity ⚡ could open entirely new therapeutic avenues.

Funded by Cancer Research UK and the National Cancer Institute in the US through the Cancer Grand Challenges initiative, it marks the first time this prestigious programme has been granted to a Portuguese institution 🇵🇹.

The award also sends a strong signal about the importance of basic, curiosity-driven science 🔬 – research that asks fundamental questions about how biology works, with the potential to transform medicine 💡.
