🧬 Como é que o corpo mantém o cancro “adormecido”? Ana Luísa Correia, Investigadora Principal na Fundação Champalimaud, foi distinguida com uma bolsa AACR Trailblazer no valor de 1 milhão de dólares para investigar um dos desafios mais urgentes na investigação em cancro: as metástases.

Quando o cancro se espalha, células individuais podem viajar até órgãos distantes e permanecer dormentes durante anos antes de se reativarem subitamente. Estas células “adormecidas” são uma das principais razões pelas quais o cancro pode regressar muito tempo após o tratamento.

A investigação de Correia explora uma ideia surpreendente: que a comunicação de longa distância entre o sistema nervoso 🧠 e o sistema imunitário 🛡️ ajuda a controlar se estas células permanecem dormentes ou começam novamente a crescer.

Ao desvendar como esta rede neuro-imunitária mantém o cancro sob controlo – e porque por vezes falha – este trabalho poderá abrir caminho a novos tipos de terapias 💡 que mantenham o cancro permanentemente dormente ou o eliminem antes que possa reativar-se.

Este projeto faz parte do maior programa de bolsas alguma vez lançado pela AACR, que visa apoiar cientistas promissores em momentos decisivos das suas carreiras.

🧬 How does the body keep cancer “asleep”? Ana Luísa Correia, Principal Investigator at the Champalimaud Foundation, has been awarded a $1 million AACR Trailblazer Grant to investigate one of the most urgent challenges in cancer research: metastasis.

When cancer spreads, individual cells can travel to distant organs and remain dormant for years before suddenly reactivating. These “sleeping” cells are a major reason cancer can return long after treatment.

Correia’s research explores a surprising idea: that long-range communication between the nervous 🧠 and immune 🛡️ systems helps control whether these cells stay dormant or begin to grow again.

By uncovering how this neuro-immune network keeps cancer in check – and why it sometimes fails – the work could open the door to new kinds of therapies 💡 that keep cancer permanently dormant, or eliminate it before it can reawaken.

This project is part of the AACR’s largest-ever grant programme, which aims to support promising scientists at critical junctures in their careers.
