Shiatsu, which means "finger pressure", is an Asian bodywork that originates in Japan. Shiatsu is similar to massage, but it is not a traditional massage. It works by balancing the body's energy (ki), which moves through the body in channels known as meridians.
Even if it looks like a relaxing passive activity, it's a way to develop and work on yourself. The purpose of Shiatsu is to address the emotions you hold and store in your body. It taps into the mind and body's natural relaxation responses and balances your energy using the body's pathways called meridians. When you are stressed, your energy becomes imbalanced and can create a "traffic jam" along the meridians causing you to feel anxious, empty or tired. Shiatsu uses gentle, rhythmic rocking, stretching, joint rotation, palm and thumb pressure to balance this energy and promote healing from within.
