High Doses of ADHD Meds Linked to Increased Psychosis Risk

A recent study found that adults taking high doses of amphetamine-based medications for ADHD, such as Adderall, are at a significantly higher risk of developing psychosis or mania.

The risk was over five times greater for individuals taking 30 mg or more of dextroamphetamine, which corresponds to 40 mg of Adderall.

The researchers discovered that 81% of psychosis or mania cases among these patients could have been avoided by using lower doses.

Importantly, no similar risk was found with methylphenidate (Ritalin), suggesting dose and medication type are key factors in this side effect.

While the study doesn’t prove causality, it highlights the need for caution when prescribing high doses of amphetamines, especially for patients with a predisposition to psychosis.

Physicians are encouraged to consider alternative medications or lower doses to mitigate this risk.
