Hi Friends, I'm reporting here on a major NEW STUDY that shows PSILOCYBIN medicine is highly and significantly effective over placebo in 93 participants for alcohol use disorder, AUD (Bogenschutz et al., 2022).
Previous clinical studies since research licenses began to be available in about 2006 showed effectiveness in people with depression, anxiety, to***co addiction, PTSD and other symptoms.
This new study used a standardized dose of pure psilocybin (25 mg) which is equivalent to about 2.5 grams of dried mushrooms, based on an average of about 1% psilocybin + psilocyin found in cultivated Psilocybe cubensis cultivars, up to 4 grams in a second session. These doses were calculated on a body weight of 154 lbs. The researchers increased the doses based on higher or lower body weights. In both sessions, the placebo was given to about half the participants, consisting of diphenhydramine, an antihistamine.
Primary Outcome
"...percentage of heavy drinking days, assessed using a timeline followback interview, contrasted between groups over the 32-week period following the first administration of study medication...."
Results
" Percentage of heavy drinking days during the 32-week double-blind period was 9.7% for the psilocybin group and 23.6% for the diphenhydramine group, a mean difference of 13.9%."
The number of standard drinks per day was lower in the psilocybin group.
The psilocybin was combined with psychotherapy, similar to what might be available when working with a trained and experienced facilitator.
Overall, the percentage of heavy drinking days among participants taking psilocybin was 41% of that observed in the diphenhydramine-treated group."
The researchers are in the planning stages of a multicenter trial with about 200 participants.
Safety and Side Effects
Those taking psilocybin had slightly higher heart rates and blood pressure and a more intense experience than those receiving the antihistamine. The three serious events occurred in the group receiving the placebo, and that included vomiting from binge drinking.
Overall, the psilocybin was determined to be safe and effective for alcohol use disorder.
Another step to acceptance of psychedelic medicine for clinical and guided use in our society. I think about the high level of safety for psilocybin medicine, as well as the side benefits it can have for personal growth, rather than side effects of other pharmaceutical interventions.
