Happy year of the Wood dragon!

I asked my friend and bazi astrologer Yuen Wong for a quick rundown of what we are dealing with, universal Qi-wise? A long discussion ensued about how one size doesn’t fit all, and as a doctor of Chinese medicine and astrologer we understand each other perfectly: it all depends. Your chart will determine how dragon year will pass for you, just like your constitution and lifestyle matter when I start treating your illness. But here’s a quick synapse:

“It looks like for most zodiacs it’s a year of Change. Granted we do have to look into the hour, day, month, and year pillars. But generally we should be aware and adaptable.

It’s a fantastic time to try something completely new. It’s a year of action, of doing. But with all things in the midst of doing and action, be aware of mental health.

The Yang energy may affect liver and gallbladder so perhaps limit drinking this year. Yang energy and liver (liver fire) issues can also cause outbursts so be constantly mindful and incorporating relaxing activities would be beneficial.

Studying spirituality is especially helpful. Now I don’t believe color and wearing certain pendants can change your destiny but being aware of one self and be able to look within from out is the key to any success. Bazi for me is just a looking glass of self awareness. Some people get dealt bad cards, and we look for ways to transcend our charts. Which is a topic for another day. But definitely be aware of those that advertise lucky numbers, colors and charms”

If you want a personal chart, message me for Yuen Wong’s contact, you might just manage to grab a spot on her schedule.

And I’m planning a live to look into Chinese medicine side of things for the year of Yang Wood and what it means for our physiology and wellbeing.

新年快乐, 恭喜发财!

TO GRAIN OR NOT TO GRAIN?⠀

I was grain-free for a few years, strictly at first, becoming looser as time went on and my intestinal tract healing went deeper.⠀

I experimented with many grain-free bread recipes. They kept my freezer filled to the brim with almond flour. They had me borrowing kitchen equipment from friends to process kilos of nuts into smooth butter. They kept me happy - while what came out was certainly not bread, it was close enough to deliver shape, chewiness and vehicle functions of bread.⠀

Then I started making exceptions for parties and dinners out, gauging how I felt and tightening the restriction where necessary - I LOVED bread, but I loved feeling energetic, vibrant and unbloated more than I love bread, especially its commercial varieties full of enhancers and non-food ingredients. ⠀

I have a sourdough starter with a name that I feed and turn into bread regularly all by myself 😂⠀

I am still listening to my body carefully, but sourdough seems to be better tolerated by me and some of my clients who have gone through deep gut repair process. For some, grain-free living seems to still be the best - I work on case by case basis through custom wellness program and muscle testing.⠀

What is your relationship with bread?⠀
🍞 all fair and square⠀
🥨it’s complicated ⠀

Yesterday I shared exciting news about satisfying 11-hour sleep I had. After a couple of nights of very average sleep, a packed client schedule and a spell of struggle to fold in for the night on time, it felt like a full-blown vacation. I felt like a queen. And I felt yet again compelled to share how important sleep was for well-being.⠀

My DMs were flooded with responses from friends who are new moms, mostly to children under 2 years old. I am not a parent, but I can imagine at least in part what it feels like, to live in the fog. As someone who had yearly winter bouts of insomnia for a number of years, I felt the pang of dread and hopelessness reading those messages. I also felt like we are failing not just mothers, but also children and society at large.⠀

As a kinesiologist and acupuncturist I routinely work a lot with sleep disturbance. A lot of time it’s about rebuilding habits, shifting a few ideas around worthiness and productivity, educating the client on physiology. But I can’t help much where there is no support system for a new mother to claim her rightful rest. Where she alone carries out infant care. Where she is taught to cultivate self-sacrificing maternal instinct and to feel guilt when she puts her oxygen mask first, hires help, expects partner to shoulder the responsibility. ⠀

I can speak from experience of being the child of chronically sleep deprived mother who worked in NICU and sometimes went on 3 shifts straight: day, night, day again. A tender, kind woman, she would be stuck in survival mode, with all the emotional repercussions of that: anger, resentment, fight mode, and I was on the receiving end of that. I recognize now that so many of our violent screaming matches were from me needing her presence, and her feeling like she had nothing else to give. Because she barely slept for decades.⠀

Where can we support you, mothers? And where can you be more forthcoming with your needs, leaving guilt and shame for asking?⠀

P.S. I have an idea: call every person who ever asked you when you’re going to have a baby and tell them they are the new night nanny 😆⠀
I’m not a parent yet and even I will be set for a month

HOW DOES BIOENERGETIC KINESIOLOGY SESSION HAPPEN?⠀

1️⃣ Client’s request. Anything from chronic pain to emotional pattern to feeling stressed to specific illness can be a request. If there are too many requests, muscle testing determines the most urgent stagnation in the river of Qi
When I work online, my own muscles surrogate the client’s neural responses, like the picture.

We all develop compensations around trauma, but pain and discomfort is a sign compensation is not working anymore. Sometimes it erupts as anger, sometimes as self-sabotage, sometimes as pain, sometimes as infection, because suppression empties immune resources of the body.⠀

2️⃣ Uncovering. Muscle testing reveals what is really under the surface. Request is simply an entry point.

Everything is connected with everything else in the body, mind and spirit, and everything can be a cover-up for anything else. ⠀

It’s not rare in my sessions for client to enter through back pain and end up in chronic guilt, enter through migraines and end up in immune deficiency or allergy, enter through anger and end up in childhood trauma.⠀

Muscle testing and library of kinesiology protocols help me to track where the Qi blockage is in the body, the event that created it and the current trigger.⠀

3️⃣ Processing & desensitization.⠀
Moving through protocol, we face the trapped energy in a safe environment. With acupressure and other rebalancing techniques I regulate the nervous system response.

The “it” under the surface creates habitual emotional response, which pulls on all biochemical pathways of the body. Even when we don’t have active memory of what happened, such as when I trace stressful event to infancy or even past life or ancestral experience, we feel the body’s reaction.⠀

Through the session we separate the emotional charge from the facts of our history. You integrate the experience and reclaim the Qi that was frozen in the blockage.⠀

4️⃣Integration. I recommend to take 10-15 minutes in silence immediately after the session to digest the experience. The integration will keep happening between the sessions.⠀

“YIN AND YANG are the Dao 道” - teaches I-Ching. Unity of Yin and Yang makes up the universe and every single atom of every single being in it.⠀

Sun is Yang and moon is Yin ☀️🌑

Fire is Yang and water is Yin 🔥💧

Action is Yang and rest is Yin 🤸🧘

Yin and Yang are the opposites, yet they originate from same root and form a whole. They are interdependent and mutually nourish, deplete and balance each other. Without Yin, Yang cannot arise, without Yang, Yin cannot manifest. Without Rest, Action cannot arise. Without Action, Rest cannot manifest.

TCM is very poetic and philosophical and seemingly removed from practicalities of constipation, painful cycles or headaches. But its deep wisdom always pointed to imbalance of natural order as root cause of any disease. Symptoms are just the manifestation of how much was depleted from one side or another that brings disturbance to the whole. 阴阳相互转化 Yin Yang xianghu zhuanhua - Yin and Yang are inter-transforming, one literally becomes the other in endless dance ☯️

If you only GIVE, you are depleting Yin, and Yang fire rages through the entire body.

Rage not being a figure of speech here - too many clients come to me to work with all-consuming anger that spills out at smallest provocation. Spills at people they love the most.

What they discover is that anger is a self-preservation mechanism of the body that has been worked and worn to the bone.

If all we do is DO (Yang), and avoid REST (Yin) at all cost, eventually every atom, cell and tissue will be manifesting this imbalance.

Now, in the Spring, anger and rage of Wood element are coming to the surface, and in so many sessions we get back to nurturance, imbalance, martyrdom and self-sacrifice as ways to claim love you don’t give to yourself.

So, where do you try to cheat the system and get by on just the Yang of doing?

IRRITABLE, CRANKY AND PLOTTING REVENGE? Your Liver is waking up for spring 🌱☯️😉⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Wood element, 木mù, governs Spring, Liver and Gallbladder. Liver filters and stores blood of the entire body, houses Ethereal Soul and rules female health like the Yin Queen she is.⠀
Gallbladder, Liver’s Yang partner, is a humble organ that governs potent emotions: decisiveness and courage.⠀⠀
⠀⠀
The murder plots running in your wild springtime dreams? That’s Anger, the main emotion related to Liver. When suppressed, it stagnates Liver Qi. When vented uncontrollably, it causes Fire. ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Headaches and migraines, especially on the left side of the head, dizziness, nausea, seasonal allergies, itchy skin and irritated eyes, endometriosis, menstrual issues, disturbing dreams, cracky tendons, acid reflux, constipation and rancid-smelling sweat can all signal that Liver and Gallbladder need some tender loving care. ⠀
⠀⠀
Eat for your Liver in Spring:⠀⠀
⠀⠀
🍋Avoid excess of sour foods⠀⠀
It can overstimulate the Liver. Overactive Liver in TCM can suppress digestive function performed by Spleen and Stomach. We call it “Wood insulting Earth” according to 5 element theory. ⠀
⠀⠀
☕️Add some bitters⠀⠀
First sprouts of spring are often bitter - dandelion greens, arugula, radicchio, endive, leeks. They gently aid the Liver function. ⠀
⠀⠀
❗️Coffee is bitter and has a strong effect on contractility of Gallbladder. That is why many people need the morning cup to get the plumbing going 🪠 ⠀⠀

Because I work with stress and burnout, I find coffee way too stimulating for my clients’ battered nervous systems. Start your day with warm water or chamomile tea - bile is about 90% water, and warmth relaxes the sphincters. I recommend drinking at least 3L of water a day.⠀⠀

🥦Cruciferous family has long been known for supporting natural Liver cleansing. Add broccoli, cauliflower and all sorts of cabbages to your plate.⠀⠀
⠀⠀
❌ Spring is the season to cleanse, but juice fasts and raw salads are NOT it! Liver needs amino acids to process metabolites, and it’s still too cold for raw salads in most parts of the world. Work with a specialist not to harm your health.⠀
⠀⠀
How are you this Spring?🏴‍☠️

Part 3 on ⠀

Dampness, 湿气 shíqì, literally “wet Qi”, is the worst enemy of Spleen and a cause of many illnesses and syndromes:⠀

Brain fog and dizziness ⠀
Mucus and clogged sinuses⠀
Nodules⠀
Yeast overgrowth⠀
Rashes, eczema⠀
Arthritis⠀
Loose stools⠀
Bloating and heaviness⠀
Swelling and water retention⠀
Lymphatic diseases⠀
Chronic fatigue⠀
Sluggishness⠀
Lack of appetite, especially in the morning⠀
Greasy tongue coating⠀

There are two types of dampness, internal and external.⠀

EXTERNAL dampness is caused by exposure to high humidity for a long time and is most often the root cause of arthritis. It is an occupational hazard of not just fishermen and water sports athletes, but of those who live in damp areas, and even those who regularly exercise in the rain (you’ll be surprised how many do, and I did, too!).⠀

Protect yourself: change out of wet clothing immediately after exercising, protect your feet and ankles from wet cold and soak with dampness-removing herbs .⠀

INTERNAL dampness is brought about by diet and lifestyle. Check part 2 of for dietary no-no’s. This type of Dampness very often manifests in phlegmy Lungs and hard-to-eliminate turbid sputum. ⠀

In TCM we have a saying: “Spleen is the source of Dampness and Lungs are the container”. If one suffers from chronic Lung infections and spends every morning gathering turbid phlegm around sinuses, it is time to look at Spleen.⠀

Support your body with dampness-expelling medicinals: adzuki beans and coix seeds can be eaten like regular foods. 陈皮aged tangerine peel and 茯苓fuling, poria can be made into decoction and sipped on as tea.⠀

Addressing Dampness is one of the primary tasks of my custom wellness programs. I am yet to meet someone who doesn’t have at least a few symptoms and needs help adjusting Spleen function. Programs are fully personalized, including dietary approach, lifestyle adjustment, lymphatic work instructions and herbs individually muscle tested for your needs, and start at EUR850 for 3 months. I am now starting to book the slots for February. Find more information on Program highlights, and DM or email me to book!

MAKE YOUR 2023 MOST RESTFUL YET: journaling prompts to understand yourself.

I work with people who find it hard to slow down and just be. I have a lot of compassion for those who are restless, consumed with productivity and being useful – you are all my tribe.

I was not capable of sitting still and doing nothing, but only because I was allowing the adrenaline-addicted part of me to run the show, shunning the tender, slow side of me.

Your SELF is an amalgam of many parts. I had to meet all of my parts, learn about their wounds, their motivations and their conflicts to move forward in my healing.

Learning what drives your perpetual movement marks your triggers and gives you keys to unlock the medicine of stillness for your personal consumption: the dose, the method, the frequency.

Use these journaling prompts to meet new layers of yourself so that 2023 may be your most restful and replenishing year yet:

What part of you is seeking perpetual movement?

What part of you is craving peace?

Describe their looks, names, sizes.

What are their origin stories? Family? School? Society? Painful events?

What are their wounds?

Who runs the show now?

How does that influence your wellbeing?

What does each part truly need? To feel loved? Needed? Protected?

How can you honor their desires?

What is the BENEFIT of letting things be as they are? Does it “give you the right” to be, feel, behave a certain way?

What is the benefit of you choosing the new way?

How does compassion for both of these parts look and feel?

What medicine have you just found in yourself?

How will you move forward with this knowledge?

Part 2 on ⠀

What your Spleen needs to keep producing Qi for you to keep living your best life.⠀

🥘FOOD. Spleen hates, hates, hates cold. Cold foods include energetically cooling cucumber, watermelon, celery, and physically cold ones: iced drinks, raw salads, frozen smoothies, dairy, sushi, foods straight from the fridge. When consumed out of season, with no regard to health condition, without being balanced with spices and cooking methods these foods can be damaging to the organ. ⠀

The Spleen will need to use extra Qi to warm food to break it down. If Spleen is already deficient this results in cramps, cold sensations and diarrhea. In the long run, poor breakdown and absorption leads to Blood deficiency – anemia, missed periods, memory problems and hair loss to name just a few.⠀

Spleen hates sugar. It is nourished by sweet flavor but SUGAR. IS. NOT. IT, neither are refined carbohydrates like white bread and pastry. Naturally sweet vegetables like carrot and pumpkin, whole grains and pulses (not suitable for some of my clients at certain stages of digestive healing), meat and fish, nuts and natural spices support health of the Spleen. Spleen LOVES warm foods like stews, broths, cooked vegetables and of course, hot water .⠀

🚶MOVEMENT. Spleen Qi is moved by 4 limbs. Walking is the easiest exercise to maintain health of the Spleen – and the entire body. Get your step counters and get 一万步 yi wan bu, 10000 steps, in. ⠀

🫁BREATH. Three branches of Spleen meridian pass through the diaphragm. Ancient Chinese knew what science knows now – breath is the easiest way to switch nervous system away from stress and into rest-and-digest mode. ⠀

Digestion is the first system that is hurt by chronic stress – in TCM we say that “Spleen is hurt by overthinking”. If you seem to be doing “all the right things” with your diet, but your Spleen symptoms are still present, the missing piece is chronic stress. ⠀

In bioenergetic kinesiology sessions I track and release this stress with help of muscle testing, so your Spleen can get back to work producing vital force. DM me to book

Part 1 on Her Highness Spleen ⠀

More than just spleen as we know it in Western anatomy, a humble immune organ inside left side of ribcage. The Spleen in TCM, Traditional Chinese Medicine, includes pancreas and Stomach, a Yin-Yang pair that is in charge of all nutrient processing and absorption, in turning food qi into body qi. In short, Spleen is your digestion, especially the upper digestive organs that are in charge with proper breakdown of the food and setting of the rhythm for movement waves of the entire digestive tract.⠀

Spleen is in charge of production of all the postnatal (post-birth or post-heaven) Qi of the body . It takes in, processes and transforms foods into one of the most nutrient dense fluids of the body – blood. ⠀

There are two Spleen meridians, on R and L side, running from the big toe to side of the ribcage, almost to the armpit. The pain, discomfort, skin discoloration or muscle cramping along the pathway can also be the signs that Spleen is out of balance. We use meridians for diagnosis and treatment with acupuncture, acupressure, tuina manipulations, moxibustion, herbal ointments. ⠀

Spleen governs overall metabolism, insulin sensitivity, appetite and weight, peristalsis and elimination, energy levels, immunity and allergies, quality of muscles and strength, tissue repair, blood vessels, focus and concentration, mental processes.⠀

A quick test for deficient Spleen, how many did you say “yes” to?⠀

sluggish body and mind, fatigue ⠀
thick and greasy tongue coating⠀
sugar cravings⠀
loose muscles⠀
varicose veins and capillary nets⠀
deficient weight or weight gain⠀
metabolic syndrome or diabetes⠀
constipation or loose stools⠀
menstrual dysfunction or missing periods⠀
anxiety and overthinking⠀
brain fog⠀
allergies. ⠀

3 and above, if persistent, signal that your Spleen needs some serious TLC (and TCM ☯️)⠀

We will look into regulating Spleen in part 2 . Subscribe and set new post notification online at the bell sign on on top of account🔔
