⚖️ Right to appeal AIMA decisions is protected
🛂 UNEF (the new border unit) continues to operate

⚠️ Next step: Parliament will debate the Nationality Law in September, changes that could lengthen residency requirements and tighten naturalization. Experts are warning some of these may also be unconstitutional.

On August 8, 2025, Portugal’s Constitutional Court blocked the Government’s anti-immigration package approved in June.
What this means: the current Foreigners Law remains in place for now.

📌 Main Impacts:

👨‍👩‍👧 Family Reunification
• Remains possible regardless of how long you’ve lived in Portugal.
• Can be requested for spouses, children, and parents — even if they are already in Portugal.
• ❗ But in practice, AIMA is currently only processing cases for minors (under 18), unless there is a court order.

💼 Job-Seeking Visas
• Still available to all foreign nationals if they meet existing requirements:
• Proof of funds (3× minimum wage = €2,610),
• Accommodation,
• Return ticket.
• Valid for 120 days (extendable by 60) to find formal work.
• The Government’s attempt to restrict these to highly qualified workers was struck down.

⚖️ Right to Appeal
• Foreigners keep the right to challenge AIMA decisions in court.
• The blocked law tried to suspend this right.

🔮 What’s Next?
• Government says it will try again with a revised proposal that respects the Constitution.
• It will go through the full parliamentary process, with required consultations.

📅 Nationality Law Changes – still scheduled for September vote, but also facing criticism over constitutionality.

🇵🇹 Big news on Portugal’s immigration laws!

The Foreigners Law was approved in Parliament on July 17 and is now awaiting Presidential and Constitutional Court review before becoming official.

It introduces new rules for visas, family reunification, and border control.

The Nationality Law is still being discussed and will only be voted on in September.

📌 What you need to know about Family Reunification:

- This is when you’re already living in Portugal and want to bring your family to join you.

- Under the new rules, you must have 2 years of residence before applying (from your country of origin, except for minors, their application can be made from Portugal).

✅ Better option: Apply for your visa and your family’s visas together at your consulate. This avoids the 2-year wait and processes everything at the same time.
