We are pleased to announce that most of the articles of the special issue "Oncometabolism: the Switchboard of Cancer" can now be accessed in

This special issue was commissioned by Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) – Molecular Basis of Disease, a FEBS Oncometabolism 2019 sponsor, and is edited by Paulo J. Oliveira and Ana M. Urbano, co-organizers of the two FEBS Oncometabolism editions. The articles, mostly from FEBS Oncometabolism Speakers, cover a wide range of hot topics in oncometabolism research. The special issue also contains an article on Otto Warburg, the "father of oncometabolism", an educational article on intermediary metabolism, and articles on state-of-the-art techniques for unveiling tumour metabolism.
In the 1920's, Otto Warburg, one of the greatest biochemists of all time, uncovered an intriguing metabolic phenotype shared by most cancer cells: a higher than normal reliance on lactic acid fermentation for energy generation, under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions.
