YES Meeting was born in 2006 as a result of a pioneer idea of a student from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto. His goal was to gather students from the biomedical areas as well as professional researchers from reference centers and give them the opportunity to compare and discuss their works. The main goal of this project has been ever since to provide students the feeling that their work is not only given the proper value but also recognition from the scientific world. Since its first edition, the congress has been growing and in the last years we can say that it has taken off. In what concerns to the scientific program, the meeting includes:
1. Simposiums held by worldwide known scientists from the most important research centers in the world;
2.Presentations by students of their research works made in their own universities on one of the following six themes: Public Health & Medical Informatics, Neurosciences, Molecular Biology & Physiology, Oncology & Immunology, Clinical Medicine and Surgery;
3.Interactive workshops on multiple themes relation both to basic medicine like human anatomy, obesity, diabetes and clinical medicine such as Eye Surgery, Laparoscopic Surgery, Hematology, Bioengineering among many others. Besides the scientific aspect, there is also a social programme which includes a guided visit to the historic sights of Porto city a other places with turistic interest. It is given the opportunity to the participants to taste the traditional Portuguese cuisine and there is a night reserved to a concert of Tunas Académicas da Faculdade de Medicina as well as Grupo de Fados in order to promote Fado, recently considered Intangible Cultural Heritage. Finally, the meeting comes to an end with a farewell dinner in which the prizes of best research works are given to the students.

From Rejection to Perfection: Rethinking Transplantation

Organ rejection remains one of the biggest challenges in transplantation. Current strategies rely on suppressing the recipient’s immune system, forcing patients into lifelong immunosuppression.

At the 20th YES Meeting, Rainer Blasczyk (Hannover Medical School) will present a groundbreaking approach: instead of silencing the immune system, his team works on making donor organs invisible through genetic engineering.

This vision of “invisible organs” could mean a future without rejection, without immunosuppression, a future with better graft survival, improved quality of life, and more organs available for patients in need.

Dr. Heidi Hales (Cardiff University, UK)
Young people with risk behaviours, what do we know and how do we develop services to meet their needs?
Dr. Hales will explore violence risk assessment in young people, mental health challenges in prison settings, and the international work of GIRAF to improve adolescent forensic mental health services. A perspective that shows how addressing offenders’ needs can help reduce future community violence.

Nikolas Lemos (Queen Mary University of London, UK)
A leading Forensic Toxicology expert, with research spanning drug-facilitated crimes, driving under the influence, post-mortem toxicology, and the analysis of hair, nails, and other keratinous matrices.
