Yoga means different things to different people.

In a philosophical sense yoga means Union. Union between inner and outer. Union between lower and higher consciousness. Union of the mind, body and soul. It is the realization of non-dualism, where the illusion of separation between "I" and the rest of the Universe is removed. Your Consciousness and Universal Consciousness are one and the same: no difference, no division. So ultimately, yoga is a paradox. Really there is nothing to unite, since nothing was ever separated in the first place. 

Yoga is not teaching you anything you don't already know somewhere deep within your being. Your genetic systems are encoded with this knowledge. The role of a yoga practices is to awaken you to what you have simply forgotten along the way.

While the ultimate goal of yoga can be difficult to grasp intellectually, the journey along the way is perhaps even more important. Whatever the meaning of yoga is for you, I hope it makes you remember your true power. I hope it helps you find your way home.

In the Western World yoga is mostly known for its asana practice on the mat. If you studied sacred scriptures you would discover that physical movement was not a part of original yoga traditions in India. Thousands of years ago practitioners focused on expanding spiritual energy using breathing techniques and mental focus while seated in a lotus pose. Once embraced as a lifetime spiritual path in order to achieve higher states of consciousness today is yoga primarily seen as a physical exercise.

Asana as we know it today, is only one part of this ancient practice. There is nothing wrong with being attracted just by the physical aspect of yoga. In fact it prepares us for the following stages and at the same time gives us an opportunity to get in touch with our bodies and our minds. However, if reduced only to postures and movement we are missing out the real essence of yoga.

While ancient yogis were all about stilling the mind in order to experience ultimate reality and move toward self-realization, nowadays meditation is mostly seen as a powerful tool to help us remain in the present state of being and to manage our stressful hectic day to day life.

When we start meeting ourselves as we are - we become more aware of our monkey mind. Meeting the monkey mind means becoming aware of our restless, uncontrollable, loud thoughts. Analyzing our past or worrying about the future, we are always stuck listening to our own inner dialogue that prevents us from living the life of here and now.

I like the way Gurmukh describes meditation:

"Meditation means learning to watch thousands of thoughts created by the mind and not judge them or be attached to one, just as we are not fixed on one drop of water as we observe the flow of a river. With practice, you will arrive at a clear and serene space inside of you, where you can begin to know your true nature.”

Self exploration keeps reminding me how much we as a society ignore the part of self that makes us the same, that brings us peace. When we ignore our true self, we feel fear. We feel a constant sense of lack. We feel separation. Until we don’t collectively wake up from the illusion that we are separate, there will be no peace.

I like to challenge myself. It doesn't need to be anything out of this world, but as long as it takes me out of my comfort zone, it will do it. It can be something like two weeks of raw food challenge, one month of waking up at 5AM, cold showers, breath retention, seven months off alcohol and sugar, etc... You get the picture, right? 😄

It's my way of learning the importance of discipline. Some believe that discipline is the strongest form of self-love. It is ignoring current pleasures for bigger rewards to come. It is one way of looking at it. I like to see it as a play. Play where the main character, which is you, takes on challenges to build resilience. Or sometimes it is just for pure entertainment, to see what you are capable of.

Ability to thrive in challenging circumstances and bounce back quickly from difficult situations is the ultimate goal of so many. If you can remind yourself every so often that the human form you took is your character and your life is nothing but a play, you are halfway ‘there’. All the drama and s**t stories your mind is playing in the background might and probably will continue, but you are no longer affected. And this is where transformation takes place.

Become a neutral observer of your story, of your ups & downs, of your challenges, detach from the results and see what happens. 🤷🏼‍♀️
