So true! ❤️

Do what you can; not what you want!!!

It is official. Most of the world is in depression, in a mild, intermediate or intense level. The number of people who are facing mental health challenges during this pandemic is increasingly growing. I want you to know that you are not alone. And I remind myself that I am not alone. I realize that I have also met a mild form of depression during these past months and have struggled from time to time to retain sanity during these insane times.

Reflecting on my own experience, as well as the shared stories from my students, I have learnt that we can come out of this negativity to a considerable degree, by just following a simple formula.

Do what you can; not what you want!!!

A big part of our suffering comes from the helplessness we feel because we are unable to do what we want to do. Before this pandemic, it seemed as if life was more or less in our control. We could travel where we wanted. Watch the cinema or hang out in restaurants whenever and wherever we wanted. Take a cab or Uber to go out and catch up with friend spontaneously. We could head to work to flee from the distractions at home. Or head back home to escape from the challenges at work. Those with jobs had a secure feeling of a paycheque coming in every month. Those without could rely on support from socialist programs of governments, where available. Teachers could meet students. Students could meet their classmates. We could hug our friends or family without any fear. It felt like the free flow of Prana was unrestricted.

All these have changed now. We are unable to do many of the things we thought were normal, essential and critical. Travel isn't possible. Hugging is forbidden. Freedom seems to have been curtailed. It seems that our once free-flowing Prana is now trapped in a cage. And when we feel caged, we can rarely feel optimistic or expansive. I get it that you may have felt this way as I have also felt this way.

But what I have also realized is that our freedom has not yet been fully taken away. We can still do small things that we still can. While they are not always what we want, they even help us to move our Prana and hence come out of this malicious trap.

For instance, I have cleaned my bookshelf, reorganized my books, got rid of those that I did not need. I have started using pen and paper instead of always being in front of the computer or phone. I have walked around in my neighbourhood. Called a friend and talked on the phone or via Zoom. Made paper rockets, origami and other things that use my hands. And many such small, simple things that I can still engage in. And these have helped. They have not only helped take my mind of what I cannot do but also has helped improve the circulation of Prana, which is key to feeling better. And it has certainly helped me during these challenging times.

So don't feel helpless because you can't do what you want. Find what you can do, and just enjoying doing it. This message is consistent with Patañjali's teachings as well. Our desires and expectations are often the sources of our misery.

So take distance from them and focus on what you can do, not what you want to do!!!

Namaste.

Aprendi a viver e a apreciar o momento, o Agora. E é esta experiência que procuro partilhar com quem se vai cruzando nas minhas aulas!

I believe Yoga changed the way I look towards the world and towards the obstacles life brings us everyday. I have learned to live and to be in the moment. And this is the message I try to share in my classes!
