There are still so many women we meet who have never massaged their scar after a cesarean birth. Some, because they lack information about how and when to do it. Others, because they are afraid of touching it or even looking at it.
Massaging the scar can be incredibly healing – both physically and emotionally. A scar with restricted mobility can cause pain, changes in sensation (increased or decreased), and even urinary or bowel changes, or pain during sexual in*******se.
The good news is that much of the recovery is, quite literally, in your own hands 😉
Try starting with small steps:
🌻 Have you really looked at it? Take a few minutes. For the scar, for yourself, and for the memories that might come up.
🌻 Touch it gently. Try offering both of you a deep breath. If you feel more comfortable, you can use a moisturizing cream and massage softly. As soon as you feel ready, try touching it directly, without cream or oil. Notice the temperature and the texture of your skin. These are important signals to guide you in the next steps.
🌻 Begin by touching the area around the scar. You can apply light pressure or massage with gentle circular movements. Over time, you can increase the pressure. Pay special attention to the areas where you feel more tension or restricted movement.
🌻 When you feel able, start massaging along the entire line of the scar, including the ends. Use your fingertips and move them up and down or in circles. You may feel this area is “harder” or even like a “rope.” There may also be small nodules or “little lumps.” If you dedicate just a few minutes each day, all these “strange” sensations tend to improve with time. (Note: Please wait until you are at least 6 weeks postpartum before moving on to this step).
If you feel unsure about the appearance of your scar, how you should massage it, or how much pressure to apply, don’t postpone it, don’t wait for it to solve itself. Talk to us, we can help you.
Most importantly: it’s never too late (days, months, even years later!) to work on and reconcile with your scar.
