In today's digital age, social media has become an integral part of our lives, influencing how we connect, communicate and consume information. While it offers numerous benefits, there is a growing concern about its effects on our mental well-being.

Next Tuesday, 14th of November, at 6 PM GMT at our Students' Hall, join Inês Homem de Melo M.D. to explore how social media can both positively and negatively affect our mental health.

Have you ever felt butterflies in your belly or had a sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach during more stressful times? Or even felt your stomach twist into knots when you were about to get in trouble? Those feelings are the result of your gut and your nervous system working in tandem.

Next Tuesday, 16th May, Dr. Benedita Sampaio Maia, and Joana Ferreira Gomes, M.D, both microbiologists, teachers and researchers at I3S are meeting us at 6pm GMT+1 at AEFMUP's Students' Hall to discuss the unlikely bridge of the microbiota-gut-brain axis and how it affects Global Health.

Experts often refer to the gut microbiome as our “second brain” but research has only just scratched the surface of the mind-microbiome connection. How important is our microbiome in determining how we feel, how we behave and how we act? Could we modulate these microbes therapeutically to improve brain health?
Come join us and get some insight on this matter.

Who has never heard "going to the psychiatrist is for crazy people", "if you occupy your mind, you'll get over it", "these are excuses not to work", among many other expressions that are still said daily in the 21st century?
Is this stigma due to fear of the unknown? Is it because the brain is such a complex organ, not visible to everyone? Is it because there is still a widespread ignorance of psychiatric illnesses?
To demystify all these questions and unveil the hidden side behind Mental Health we have the honor to welcome Dr. Henrique Prata Ribeiro, Psychiatrist at Beatriz Ângelo Hospital, assistant at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Lisbon and coordinator of the Mental Health Commission of the Health Parliament Portugal, for another Health Beats | Talk, called "Mental Health - Truth and Prejudice" on November 8th at 5:30pm at the Students' Hall. May we have an appointment?

We are privileged to introduce you to the topic of our next session: Looking at Plastic Surgery from different angles.
Did you know that the specialty has essentially 3 main strands: Aesthetic, Reconstructive and Burned?
Are you curious to know more about the main procedures of Aesthetic Surgery and what are the main reasons that lead patients to look for an intervention?
We hear more and more about Aesthetic Surgery as a weapon to fight aging or as an art to improve the human body, but how to deal with the fear of patients getting an "artificial" look when undergoing a procedure? And with the sometimes unrealistic expectations they have? Do you want to know more about the specialty and what are the main challenges for the future?
Join us in the next session of the Health Beats | Talks on October 18th at 5:30pm in the same place as always, the Students' Hall. You will have the opportunity to meet Dra. Sofia Santareno, better known as the affection doctor, a specialist in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, who is currently dedicated to Clinical Management, as well as Plastic Surgery in all its aspects (non-surgical and surgical) at The Dr Pure Clinic in Lisbon and Évora.
You won't want to miss it!

We are witnessing a paradigm shift in medicine, the era of infectious diseases has given way to the growth of chronic diseases. Medicine is evolving, average life expectancy has increased, but are we living with the quality we want? As a result of the lifestyle we have, food, physical exercise, we have witnessed an exponential growth of obesity in Portugal and in the world. The question is whether we know how to deal with this problem, are we able to control this pandemic? We are counting on Dr. Joana Menezes Nunes, endocrinologist and specialist in this area to answer all these questions on October 4th at 5pm at FMUP! See you there!
