🎉 HAPPY BOOK ANNIVERSARY JOHN! 🎉

Wishing our wonderful John a very happy 1st anniversary of his latest book - "Senses & Sensitivity: the 'doing' of Five Element constitutional acupuncture".

To mark this special occasion, as well as to celebrate John and his massive contribution to the acupuncture world over the years, we have a new blog Q&A interview for you to read!

https://acupuncturecollege.co.uk/2024/09/25/book-anniversary-interview-with-john-hicks/

This fabulous book has been out in the world for a year, and if you haven't added it to your collection yet, then what are you waiting for?!

If you have already bought it, then please do leave an amazing review over on Amazon, as this really supports John and the book - we want to get the Five Element wisdom out into the world!

And just FYI, if you've been living under a rock for the past year, “Senses & Sensitivity” is a book that brings together all the content of the Five Element Skills module at the college, as created and taught by John.

As many of our grads will be aware, this incredible wisdom has only previously existed on handouts and as discussed in class.

This book focuses on the practical, sensory skills we need to become excellent Five Element acupuncturists.

It guides us to deeply develop how we better tune into the nuances and energies of the constitutional factor or each Element type person.

Covering all of the Elements, and each of the colour, sound, emotion and odour aspects - this truly is a skills bible to treasure!

☯️ What is integration? ☯️

You’ll hear us talk a lot about how we teach an integrated style of acupuncture here at CICM, and it’s even in our name - the College of Integrated Chinese Medicine - but what does it actually mean?

What does it mean for our students, for our practitioners, and ultimately for the patients that we treat?

Well, you may or may not know, that there are many styles of acupuncture practised in the UK and all over the world.

These traditions can include TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), Five Element acupuncture, Japanese acupuncture, the Stems and Branches style, Korean acupuncture, Master Tung acupuncture and so on…

At CICM our degree course brings together the two main styles of acupuncture taught in this country - five element constitutional acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).

Five Element Acupuncture is a style of acupuncture that focuses on the five elements of nature - fire, earth, metal, water and wood.

Practitioners of this style understand that imbalances in a patient’s dominant element can lead to illness. Five element acupuncture tends to treat the patient’s deepest constitutional imbalance, and is particularly suited to emotional life challenges.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is perhaps the most well-known and widely practiced style of acupuncture. TCM uses acupuncture points along the meridians to balance the flow of Qi and promote wellness. Yin and Yang are important concepts in this style of acupuncture and it is used to treat a wide range of physical and emotional conditions.

So having this integrated combination allows our graduates to treat patients with a wide variety of issues, both chronic and acute, benefitting from both styles of treatment - it truly is the best of both worlds!

☯️ And did you know that we are unlike any other acupuncture college in the UK, because we offer this integrated curriculum?

Would you like to work with people with cancer, but feel it might be too challenging? Are you working with people with cancer, but unsure about what is safe?

When working with people with cancer, there are many questions about what constitutes safe practice. Should people undergoing chemotherapy have acupuncture? Is acupuncture safe for people taking anti-coagulants? And what does “at-risk” of lymphoedema mean?

These are just a few of the questions commonly posed by acupuncturists about treating people with cancer. And uncertainty about these is often a deterrent to acupuncturists providing good supportive care, especially to people when they are undergoing cancer treatment.

Beverley de Valois is sharing her wisdom about this over on our latest blog post, in preparation for her debut training event on this subject at CICM, based around her research paper and amazing book on this topic.
