Root Healing Iboga Retreats

Root Healing Iboga Retreats Root Healing is an Iboga Retreat & Healing Center in Portugal and Thailand.

Approach:
We follow the well-known saying in Gabon that "you cannot have Iboga without Bwiti and Bwiti without Iboga." This ensures that the spirit of Iboga remains strong for our guests' healing and also gives them the tools to heal themselves and live genuine, happy, and connected lives. We are also dedicated to promoting a safe and comfortable healing environment for our guests with the help of

Western Medicine, Science, and hospitality. We understand where our guests come from and want them to feel safe and comfortable so they can focus on their own healing while at our retreats. Medicine:
All of our Iboga is sustainably/traditionally grown and ceremonially harvested/prepared. It is collected and brought back from our own Bwiti village ensuring that the spirit of the medicine is intact and strong. Offerings:
Traditional Bwiti Iboga Retreats, which lasts 7 days and include: 2 Iboga ceremonies, food, accommodations, counseling, fireside teachings, day-trips to beaches/nature, preparation calls, integration, and aftercare

Iboga Detox, which can last from 10-30+ days depending on the clients' needs and includes a full withdrawal-free detox from drugs, multiple addition ceremonies, extensive support and everything else offered at the retreats mentioned above. Preinitiation is offered as an add-on to the Traditional Bwiti Iboga Retreats and is a special coming of age ceremony that will connect you deeply into the Bwiti Tradition, the spirit of Iboga, and yourself.

It's not that we're asking you to focus on the food...

It's just that the locally-sourced, organically grown and freshly farmed ingredients used by our kitchen team at Root Healing (Thailand) naturally transform into meals that delight our guests - whatever your dietary requirements.

Even on processing days and in preparation for the ceremonies, when our menu is more delicately seasoned, lighter and simpler - in line with what best suits the body when it comes to experiencing iboga.

You can access sample meal plans to understand more about what you'll expect to eat when during your experience with iboga, and get in touch for a FREE CONSULTATION CALL where you can chat to our provider team about all aspects of joining us for one of our traditional Missoko Bwiti retreats via the link in our bio.

The proper way to follow any iboga ceremony…

Is with its own processing day, and its own integration day. Every time.

That’s why our Psychospiritual Retreats are 8 days long — because they contain two traditional Missoko Bwiti iboga ceremonies — each accompanied by the right setup, space and time to allow the iboga to work through you, as you get acclimatised to working with the new kinds of being and self-knowing potentiates by working with the iboga.

On your integration days, you’ll find that the realisations and deeper understandings keep coming — and you’ll be able to fully take them in, given that we’ve built these nature-centric days into the timetable of our retreats to enable you to do just that.

At Root Healing (Thailand), on-site Thai massages and individual Muay Thai and yoga sessions complement our excursion offerings, which include visits to the temples dotting the surrounding hilltops and visits to our local elephant sanctuary.

When you’re considering an experience with iboga, try asking yourself questions like…

❓Will the ceremony follow a particular tradition❓

How connected to the roots of the tradition are the people facilitating it?

Our ceremony providers at Root Healing have all been taught Missoko Bwiti teachings and wisdom in Gabon — where they have been empowered to share the tradition, taught to them in the exact same way they bring it to all Root Healing ceremonies.

Root Healing co-founders and .cullerton frequently return to Gabon for further training and to maintain our connection to the tradition.

Missoko Bwiti — the tradition we follow in our provision of Root Healing retreats — directly follows Dissumba, technically the original form of Bwiti, and its primary focus is healing.

There’s powerful antifungal and antibacterial action…

…Evidenced in promising research which suggests ibogaine effectively kills the bacterium of tuberculosis…

…And also appears to be a potent preventative of fungal adhesion, treating fungal infections caused by Candidia albicans…

Iboga’s anti-inflammatory properties have been found to calm auto-inflammation in the neural tissues.

And its ability to stimulate the production of new brain cells means it could have positive implications for neurodegenerative conditions like Parkinson’s disease.

Everybody experiences iboga differently — and we cannot promise you will necessarily experience effects described by anyone else — but it’s a regular occurrence that our guests at our traditional Bwiti iboga retreats comment on sensations of improved physical health.

We intend the relaxing environment we cultivate at Root Healing (Thailand) — complete with on-site private yoga and Thai massage offerings and nourishing fresh food — to support you entirely in embodied healing, and in taking the space and time to really notice subtle or more profound ways you may feel more comfortable and more energised following your experience with iboga — something many of our guests continue to notice in the days and weeks after heading home.

Where does our iboga come from?

The most potent, healing iboga — the second layer of root bark in the tabernanthe iboga shrub — grows in the wild for over decades before it is harvested in keeping with the Bwiti tradition — and prepared the Bwiti way.

When you’re exploring possibilities for an experience with iboga, look out for iboga which:

❎ Has not been farmed — growing iboga as a crop and harvesting it results in a poorer quality product, both chemically and on a spiritual level (in either case meaning you’ll need to ingest more to feel the effects).

✅ Is sustainably sourced — the iboga in this picture — the same iboga you’ll encounter on retreat at Root Healing (Portugal) or Root Healing (Thailand) is left to grow for 80+ years before being prepared for ceremony.

✅ Is ceremonially prepared, by the Bwiti, for the purpose of traditional healing — our sister village in Gabon practice Missoko Bwiti — one of the oldest forms of the Bwiti tradition and the branch specifically dedicated to healing — and when you visit us in Portugal or Thailand for a traditional Bwiti iboga retreat, it is the intact teachings passed down to us by our teachers in Gabon that underpin the experience we provide for you.

"Where does your iboga come from?" is one of many(!) good questions to ask your iboga provider ahead of booking a retreat. Sign up to our newsletter (🔗 in bio) — for our top questions you might not think to ask, but probably will ask now!

“How do I know if iboga is right for me?”

It’s a question only you can answer — and it’s very important that this is a decision you make for yourself.

This is especially important to consider in the light of iboga’s anti-addictive properties… Even if you are experiencing addiction — and even if you have been recommended to consider iboga to help with this by family or friends — the ultimate decision to book an iboga retreat must be 100% yours.

In the Bwiti tradition — which has been followed in the same way for thousands of years and is the ceremony format in which we provide iboga to our guests at Root Healing retreats — iboga is for everybody.

First offered to young adults in a coming-of-age ceremony that roots them in themselves, their community and the Bwiti tradition, the Bwiti can return to iboga when they need to course-correct their lives, helping them to reorientate on a healthy path.

In the spirit of the Bwiti tradition we share with all our guests, we welcome everybody who meets our medical screening criteria — (for a full breakdown of the screening assessment that means we can ensure iboga will be safe for you, you can find our screening handbook on our website).

A FREE CONSULTATION CALL (🔗 in bio!) with our providers after filling out our initial health questionnaire can help you decide when, how and whether to take your next step towards a traditional Bwiti healing experience with iboga.

How do Bwiti teachings combine with iboga?

Each of the Bwiti teachings we pass down to you around the fire at Root Healing retreats in our Iboga ceremonies themselves — and throughout the psychospiritual dimension of our retreats — is another mechanism you can use to:

🔥Sift through your experiences;
🔥Find your true self;
🔥And see your beliefs for what they are.

It is through this process, experiencing the Bwiti teachings combined with iboga, that you will find your freedom:

🔥In knowing, for the first time, how these beliefs and coping strategies formed;

AND, through the iboga…

🔥…you will start feeling into how your beliefs are separate from you.

Our eight-day psychospiritual retreats present a uniquely perfect opportunity — through the Bwiti teachings and iboga (the second layer of root bark found on the Tabernathe Iboga shrub) — to start seeing the wood for the trees.

We’re almost at wait-list stage for January at both centers — subscribe to our newsletter via 🔗 in bio for our seasonal discount offer for bookings in 2024! And to complete our initial health questionnaire and arrange your FREE CONSULTATION CALL.

When brain cells grow and reorganise themselves by forming new connections…

…that’s called neuroplasticity. It’s what allows the neurons (nerve cells) in the brain to compensate for injury or disease. It’s what allows the brain to adapt to new environments.

Neuroplasticity occurs when the neurotrophic factors in the brain are activated — something which has been shown to occur when the brain encounters ibogaine — one of the natural alkaloids that can be found in iboga.

Not only are brain cells are protected from death and/or damage when the neurotrophic factors are activated — this state fosters their growth and differentiation.

In this way, ibogaine can also help parts of the brain form new connections, which helps functions like memory and learning.

You can find out more about how iboga and ibogaine affect the brain via the 🔗 in our bio — and fill in our initial health questionnaire to book your FREE CONSULTATION CALL, as your next step towards a traditional Bwiti experience with iboga.

How did everything get to be so amazing?!

It’s a question we don’t often ask ourselves. Especially on the journey that typically leads you towards iboga, or ibogaine. Towards fully understanding the reasons behind some of the patterns you may have come to feel are taking over your life.

Patterns that form from the all-too-reasonable coping strategies you’ll have sensibly developed over the years, in response to the circumstances you’ve found yourself in as the years have unfolded.

It can be all too easy, particularly when these coping strategies involve substances, and the substances key us into a small subset of our original range of headspaces, to lose or temporarily forget parts of ourselves…

…Parts of ourselves that iboga can reintroduce us to, and reaffirm, as it reacquaints you with the you underneath the coping strategies, the you that may have been sidelined while you coped.

The reunion with yourself, your true self, that iboga initiates couldn’t be a more appropriate result from journeying with a sacrament which the Bwiti originally took, since the start of the traditions thousands of years ago, not to ask “What’s wrong with me?” or “What’s wrong with the world?” but “How did everything get to be so amazing?”

If you’d like to discuss iboga as an addiction interruptor or for your spiritual or physical healing or all three, you can book a FREE CONSULTATION CALL via the 🔗 in our bio.

This photo was taken on one of our integration day trips at Root Healing (Thailand), in the surroundings of our beautiful center in Chiang Mai — bookings are nearly full for January, get in touch to join us in 2024.
