A landmark day at Algarve Pain Centre.

A day of excellence, innovation and dedication led by our Head Surgeon, Dr. Ricardo Frada, and supported by our skilled surgical team, including Dr. João Ricardo Soares.

We successfully performed four advanced spine procedures, expanding our capabilities in minimally invasive spine surgery and marking the first use of Unilateral Biportal Endoscopy (UBE) at our centre: a new chapter in patient-centred care.

Case 1 – Anterior Cervical Arthrodesis (C4-C5)
Performed on a 76-year-old patient with chronic left-sided neck pain, limiting recreational activities like golf and tennis. Aimed at restoring cervical stability and relieving nerve compression.

Case 2 – UBE Foraminal Decompression (L5-S1, Right)
In our first Unilateral Biportal Endoscopy, we treated an 86-year-old patient suffering from right-sided L5 radiculopathy and reduced mobility. Minimally invasive decompression to alleviate nerve impingement.

Case 3 – TLIF Arthrodesis (L2-L3)
This patient, aged 79, presented with degenerative scoliosis and left-sided L3 radiculopathy, leading to progressive walking limitations. A left-sided TLIF was performed to stabilise the spine and restore function.

Case 4 – Percutaneous Fixation with Cemented Screws (D12-L4)
An 84-year-old patient with a traumatic L2 burst fracture (Type A4) and three months of disabling pain. Percutaneous stabilisation using fenestrated, cement-augmented screws to ensure spinal integrity with minimal disruption.

This surgical milestone reflects our ongoing mission to offer cutting-edge, patient-tailored treatments through minimally invasive techniques and surgical precision.

June 13th, we had the pleasure of attending the 4th INSIC – International Neuroradiology Spine Interventional Course, expertly organized by Prof. Dr. Ana Mafalda Reis and her team at Hospital Pedro Hispano.

The event featured a top-tier scientific program focused on the latest in lumbar pain intervention, with special attention to non-surgical treatment options.

One key highlight was Basivertebral Nerve Ablation for vertebrogenic low back pain – a procedure we perform increasingly often with excellent results. The session included a lecture by Prof. Dan Nguyen (Medical Director, Neuroradiology & Pain Services of Oklahoma; Past President of the ), moderated by our neuroradiologist Dr. Miguel Baptista. Prof. Nguyen shared an impressive case series involving MODIC Type I and II-related pain.

Dr. Miguel Costa co-moderated the session “Intradiscal Injection for Discal Hernia Treatment” with Dr. Pedro Bem, featuring a talk by Dr. Joaquim Zamarro Parra (Director of Neuroradiology, Hospital Clínico Universitario Virgen de la Arrixaca, Murcia).

Another standout was the “State of the Art: Minimally Invasive Spine Procedures” session, moderated by Prof. Dr. Ana Mafalda Reis, with presentations by Dr. Stefano Marcia on the importance of minimally invasive techniques, and Dr. Matteo Bellini on emerging ultrasound-guided percutaneous spine treatments.

A case of degenerative scoliosis where a 65 year old lady complains from Lumbar and sciatica pain since 1 year ago.

In this particular case, the patient had an extensive history of back surgery where various parts of the spine are affected (2 laminectomies), leading to a deformity of the lumbar spine.

From L2 to S1, the spine displays a curvature that was impacting the patient's general health.

Our team of surgeons performed a multilevel spinal fusion to restore the spinal alignment.

This was a success case where the patient's health condition was greatly improved, with a significant decrease in lumbar and sciatica pain.
