Evel Knievel DID have rods implanted in his low back for reasons of trauma and spinal dysfunction resulting from repeated trauma. We tried to verify the accuracy of the statements on the picture and can't confirm the 2007 removal of these lovely rods and screws, but he did have them, and they were removed at some point.
While this hardware was certainly necessary given the abuse his spine endured, and even though they may have kept one part of his spine from "sliding" off another, this is still pretty gruesome. Don't be Evel to your spine. It's the only one you've got. In fact, you should be actively taking care of it through maintenance chiropractic care that protects the spine and the precious nerves that communicate to your brain. It's not about back pain, it's about walking upright, lifting grandchildren, riding (motorcycles) into your 80's, and not using a walker or a cane when you are in your 60's.
