March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Epidemiological data show that obesity is associated with a 30-70% increased risk of colon cancer in men.

Factors that increase the risk of colorectal cancer in obese people are:

Insulin and leptin. Obese people often have elevated blood levels of insulin and insulin-like growth factors. High levels of insulin and IGF-1 can promote the development of colon, kidney, prostate and endometrial cancers. Obesity increases serum leptin levels. Leptin may also be responsible for colon cancer, but the evidence is less clear.

Adipose tissue produces excess amounts of estrogen, high levels of which have been associated with increased risks of breast, endometrial, ovarian and other cancers.

S*x and menopause. Studies show that obese males have a higher risk of colorectal cancer than females. Some studies have found that postmenopausal women have a 0.92 times higher risk than normal weight women.

Regaining weight after bariatric surgery

Studies show that about 90% of bariatric patients lose half or more of their body weight and can keep it off long-term.

According to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, more than 50% of patients regain 5% of their body weight within 2 years of the procedure.

Most patients achieve maximum weight loss one to three years after surgery. For some patients, however, sustained weight loss can be difficult, including those who are initially successful.

Weight regain is likely to be related to a number of factors, including:

Over time, the remaining stomach can expand, allowing the patient to eat more without feeling as full, as a result of which he will begin to put on weight.
The patient does not make the necessary lifestyle changes.
Binge eating, eating when you feel full, emotional eating. For example, drinking high-calorie drinks is often the cause of gradual weight gain.

Achalasia is a rare but serious condition that affects the esophagus, making it difficult for food to pass through the stomach. It is characterized by the absence of peristalsis and impaired swallowing-induced relaxation.

Myotomy is an operation that is used to weaken the lower esophageal sphincter by cutting the muscle fibres. The most common surgical technique used to treat achalasia is called a Heller myotomy.

Laparoscopic Heller myotomy is a minimally invasive procedure that opens the tight lower esophageal sphincter by cutting the thick muscle of the lower esophagus and upper parts of the stomach.
After intervention, the surgeon may advise the patient to eat while the esophagus heals.

Recommendations immediately after gastric bypass surgery
✅Make sure you drink plenty of fluids.
✅Do not consume drinks containing sugar. Sugar can contribute to dumping syndrome, a complication caused by too much sugar quickly entering the small intestine. This leads to severe nausea, fatigue, diarrhoea and even vomiting.
✅Avoid caffeine and carbonated drinks.
All of these should be avoided postoperatively and possibly even long-term.

An important recommendation before bariatric surgery is to quit smoking. People who smoke are at risk of serious complications and long-term risks during and after surgery.

There are studies that show the difference between the complications and risks that occur in smoking and non-smoking bariatric patients. These complications are higher risks of heart attack, pneumonia, lung disease, stroke, blood clots, many types of cancer, ulcers, infection.

Respiratory complications – smoking disrupts the normal functioning of the lungs and reduces one’s ability to breathe.

Pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis.

Prolonged wound healing – the toxic ingredients in ci******es prevent white blood cells from performing their function, and therefore the recovery period and wound healing take longer.

Smoking can lead to the formation of ulcers and complications that are life-threatening and require emergency surgery, such as bleeding, stomach obstruction and stomach perforation.
