Thank you so much FH Europe - The European FH Patient Network for your kind and compassionate words. We are deeply saddened by the loss of Acad. Prof. Dr. Ioan Pop de Popa. Words are not enough to describe his bright mind and his kind soul. He was a visionary that channeled his wisdom and enthusiasm in helping the patients, their families and support the academic world.
It was with great sadness that we learnt on 30th April of the death of Iowan Pop de Popa, professor, cardiologist and specialist in cardiovascular surgery.
Professor Pop de Popa was the founder of the modern cardiac surgery in Romania, a great inventor (valves, artificial arteries, artificial heart-lung machine - the 4th in the world). He performed the first open heart operation in Romania on April 5, 1973. He was the founder of the main CVD Centre in Romania (Fundeni).
Exactly 30 years ago, in 1991 he founded FOBAC - Prof. Dr. Ioan Pop de Popa (Fundația "Pop de Popa" pentru Ocrotirea Bolnavilor cu Afecțiuni Cardiovasculare), the Foundation for the Protection of Patients with Cardiovascular Diseases. FOBAC is a non-governmental organization that helped thousands of patients, including those with Familiar Hypercholesterolemia in Romania. It is also a member organization of FH Europe. Over the past 6 years, the organization has been very active in delivering FH dedicated awareness activities and advocacy work, incl population FH testing campaigns, educational events and other support for patients and their families. In November 219, together with the Network Members we had the opportunity to learn more about Professor Pop de Popa and his inspirational work, through the volunteer members of FOBAC, who hosted the FH Europe Annual Network Meeting in their beautiful capital city - Bucharest.
Professor Pop de Popa was also a General of the Romanian Army and a former member of the Parliament.
FH Europe shares its deep sympathy with his family and all his wide network of friends across the globe to remember someone who channelled his zest for life and enthusiasm in seeking to help FH patients and their families enjoy improved treatment and care.
