For ‘Lacrimarium’, a new series of works, Pavel Braila resurfaces a type of artefact long abandoned – the tear bottle – and transforms it into a group of glass sculptures that embody grief, but also reparation. The artist’s perspective is far-reaching: from mourning the loved ones to remembering the victims of the geopolitical conflicts of today.

Come by the gallery to discover the stories and the rituals that have been associated with these symbolic objects across centuries and civilisations.

A natural storyteller, Pavel Braila takes historiographical and oral literary references as starting points for his first series of ceramic objects – concentrated narratives about a world that comes together to end conflict and suffering.

Titled ‘Vessel of Return’, this series is inspired by the Abomey perforated pot. As the story goes, Ghèzo, King of Abomey (now part of Bénin), transformed a perforated pot into a symbol of unity by asking his people to cover its holes with their fingers in order to contain the country’s sacred water.

Pavel Brăila reinterprets the aspect of the vessel and re-contextualizes its symbolism as a lesson in solidarity on a global scale.

“In the exhibition at Gaep, the message is that we must stop the war. At the Venice Biennale, the message will be taken a step further – we must create another world where the rules are respected and where it is not who has power, but who is right that commands.” – Pavel Braila

In an interview with curatorial.ro, the artist speaks of his current solo show, Echoes of Harmony and Silent Cries, and his upcoming project in the Moldova Pavilion 2026 - La Biennale di Venezia.

“The exhibition is structured around four things: two stories, one lesser-known recent discovery, and one well-known fact.

1: The Abomey jug, perforated in multiple places, symbolizes unity and cohesion in the pursuit of a shared goal. It can only be filled if everyone covers the holes with their fingers, suggesting the necessity of solidarity to prevent the world from drying up.

2: The legend of tear bottles dates back over 3,000 years. These blown-glass vessels are said to have been used by ancient Middle Eastern societies, in Roman times, and during the Victorian era to collect tears during mourning.

3: A study published in PLOS Biology in 2023 reveals that women's tears contain chemical compounds that reduce aggression in men. Sniffing these tears leads to a 40% drop in aggressive behavior.

4: The ongoing wars in Ukraine, Gaza, Sudan, and elsewhere.

'Echoes of Harmony and Silent Cries' serves as a reminder of the persistent specter of pain, while searching for a mythological path toward peace.” — Pavel Braila

🗓 On view through April 4

If you missed Mureșan’s live performance, a recording is available in the gallery for the visitors of the exhibition Pavel Brăila: Echoes of Harmony and Silent Cries.

We are thrilled to announce the representation of Vlad Albu.

Working across sculpture, installation, and photography, Vlad Albu examines the subtle – and at times – uncanny relationships we form with objects, space, and architecture. His practice investigates what he calls “the quiet life of things”, focusing on their existence beyond mere utility. Rather than tools or resources whose meaning coincides with their function, the objects in his work become lenses through which contemporary conditions of fragility, uncertainty, and support can be understood.

Gaep presented works by Vlad Albu in Gaep Presents (duo exhibition with Roberta Curcă, 2025) and a public art project in Mapping the City from the Outside (part of Accelerator Câmpulung, 2024).

A selection of recent works will be included in the gallery’s presentation at miart – Milan’s international art fair (17-19 April 2026).
