Allergies occur when the immune system overreacts to substances that are harmless to the body. The number of people who experience allergies has increased over the past two decades. A clinical study evaluated the ability of tea tree essential oil diluted in jojoba oil (2% dilution) to reduce allergies due to airborne allergens. One to two drops of the diluted tea tree oil was applied to pressure points of the body (temples, behind the ears, insides of the wrist) and massaged into the skin. Participants applied the oil to two or three of these locations per day a maximum of twice daily for three weeks. Remarkably, the oil significantly reduced the frequency of multiple symptoms of allergies (watery eyes, nasal congestion, runny nose, nasal itching, sneezing, coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and phlegm production). While the severity of shortness of breath and wheezing were decreased, their frequency was not. All other symptoms were reduced in both frequency and severity.
