Silver nanoparticles are a new way to fight Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Scientists from Saratov State Medical University named after V.I. Razumovsky (SSMU) together with colleagues from the Saratov Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences have proposed an innovative method for the treatment of nosocomial infections using silver nanoparticles. The results of the study are published in the Saratov Scientific Medical Journal.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of the most dangerous pathogens, characterized by high resistance to most antibiotics. This microorganism often causes severe nosocomial infections, especially in patients with postoperative complications and chronic diseases.

Silver nanoparticles, known for their powerful antibacterial properties, are recognized as an effective remedy against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The researchers found that the bacterium Azospirillum brasilense, which lives in the soil, is able to biosynthesize silver nanoparticles ranging in size from 6 to 35 nanometers.

The resulting biopreparation demonstrated high efficacy against museum and clinical strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This approach opens up prospects for creating safe and effective means of combating resistant bacteria, which is especially important in the context of the growing number of nosocomial infections over the past 20 years.
