WORKSHOP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FOREST 🌿

While my impressions are still pure as snow in Korobitsino, I want to thank CYSS for our second field trip for a breathe of fresh air and knowledge. Our motto “to vessels” is forever relevant, and informal discussions with young doctors are as effective as scardio guidelines.

Although I happily overslept the day of the first ultrasound workshop, the other day I got to feel the transducer in my hand. My topographic cretinism is still an issue, but with patient teachers like Dmitry and Konstantin I finally have hope.

A total surprise came with Ophelia, in whom we discovered a talent for barbecues and who organized our sparkling girl’s night at spa. I propose the new line of affective disorders treatment starting off from watching a cliched romcom and iced cheesecake.

This time Korobitsino Kaskad greeted us with amazing wild kittens, making every living body go mad and complementing the PhD students’ midnight party. They were the same level of supercute as our freshmen group trying to kindle the logs.

Now my phone’s filled with dozens of hottest shots and a short movie. Let’s live like we’re making a blockbuster out of it.

Report about the trip to the Russian National Congress of Cardiology 2018

The Russian National Congress of Cardiology was held in Moscow from 25th to 28th of September. The RNCC is one of the most important cardiological events in the world. This unique platform allows practitioners to share their experiences and make new acquaintances, as well as present the results of their scientific achievements. The rich program of the congress touched upon the most topical issues in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. The sessions devoted rhythm disturbances and non-coronary heart disease were the most important for me . I was lucky to give a report at the both of these sessions. I express my gratitude to the Council of Students and Young Scientists for the opportunity to attend the Russian National Congress of Cardiology.

RESULTS OF THE ALMAZOV READINGS 2018
Section: Science and Medicine

One of the most ambitious projects of the Council of Young Scientists and Specialists which is the National Youth Medical Conference with international participation "Almazov Readings - 2018" and the Forum of Young Professionals "Almazov Workshop" were successfully held on 16-18 May, 2018. More than 800 young specialists, senior students of medical schools, residents, and graduate students from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Serbia gathered to present their scientific achievements, exchange experience and establish connection.

The conference was organized by the young activists of the Almazov Center. Their dedication for volunteering was felt in every detail, from the nicely decorated halls to the interesting reports and a fun cultural program. All three days were filled with friendly atmosphere which helped to achieve the main goal of this event - to unite the generations of people who are keen on medicine in all its kinds.

During the event, young scientists presented about 300 oral reports on four cardiology sections, sections of neurology and neurosurgery, molecular medicine, anesthesiology and resuscitation, pathology, obstetrics and gynecology, visualizing and nuclear medicine, hematology and rheumatology. Parallel to the oral presentations were 120 poster presentations. Even the youngest participants, schoolchildren, were able to present their work. Each section finished with a lecture from a leading specialist who presented a look into the future of this medical field. Within the framework of the conference, 20 workshops were held, as well as satellite symposiums on interdisciplinary problems, such as questions at the intersection of cardiology and neurology, vertigo problems for neurologists and ENT doctors. The plenary session summed up the results and awarded diplomas to the winners of the scientific works competition.

Informal communication and networking was facilitated by the excursion "Russia is my history" and a walk tour along the Neva river on a ship where participants could get to know each other better and enjoy the beautiful views of summer Petersburg.

We hope that Almazov's readings will become a good tradition of the Center and will please us with interesting reports and new friends from around the world every year!

TRIP REPORT FROM THE 31ST INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF CLINICAL NEUROPHYSIOLOGY OF THE IFCN
Washington, USA
1-6 May, 2018

This trip gave me a lot of impressions, new knowledge and interesting acquaintances!
Many lectures were conducted at the congress by the leading neurophysiologists from all around the world. I particularly liked the sections of intraoperative monitoring, clinical neurophysiology of insular epilepsy, the achievements of neurophysiology of language, Stereo-EEG and EEG of the neonatal period.

I especially liked and memorized the lectures of such outstanding neurophysiologists as Mark Hallet, MD, FACNS; Jean Gotman, PhD, FACNS (Canada); Akio Ikeida, MD, PhD, FACNS (Japan).

There was a lot of other different sections like electroneuromyography and transcranial magnetic stimulation.
A large number of training classes on video EEG monitoring, stereo EEG, intraoperative monitoring, EEG of critical conditions, clinical neurophysiology of indular epilepsy, the evolving role of neurostimulation in the management of medically refractory epilepsy, electroneuromyography and others were conducted.

Poster session included 567 presentations. I participated in this congress with a poster on the topic: "Efficacy of intraoperative electrocorticography: Long-term results of surgical treatment of symptomatic epilepsy", which can be viewed in the electronic version of the Clinical Neurophysiology journal (Volume 129, Supplement 1, May 2018, Pages e110-e111), published following the results of the 31st international congress of clinical neurophysiology, under the link: www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1388245718305625

I had a great opportunity to meet and communicate with Mark Hallet and Walter Paulus who are the presidents of IFCN (the former and current ones).

In addition to gaining knowledge and experience, I had a great time on "NEUROPHYS BOWN", which is an intellectual game of the TV-show format. It involved 4 teams of neurophysiology professors, and Mark Hallet (MD, FACNS) was the judge.

There was a magnificent Gala dinner held at the National Air and Space Museum, one of the most visited museums in the world, where, by the way, a big part of the exposition is devoted to the Soviet and Russian aerospace industries.

After such a trip, I'm even more inspired to study, work and definitely continue to do science work!
Therefore, I would like to thank the Almazov Center and the Council of Young Scientists for their support and assistance, which contributed to my participation in this congress!

SEMINAR IN KOROBITSYNO
Section: Administration

On 6-8 April, the long-awaited visiting seminar "Team Approach to the Management of Patients with Defects of Major Arteries" was held. 50 young doctors from the Almazov Center (and not only) gathered at the recreation center in Korobitsyno to discuss the importance of a multidisciplinary approach for successful control of hypertension, aneurysms, thrombophilia, and other common diseases of the vascular system. In addition to the fascinating lectures, everybody had a rare opportunity to practice ultrasound diagnostics skills on three devices brought directly to the recreation center; access to them was until late in the evening. Lecturers readily answered questions, and all those who wished to explore their inner vascular world were chosen to the role of patients.

Seminar was opened by D.A. Ovchinnikov and K.B. Abramov, who have already become masters of ultrasound diagnosis. Dmitri spoke about the connection of vertigo with atherosclerosis, and Konstantin - about the use of transcranial dopplerography in neurosurgery. M.S. Golovkova acquainted with the organization of care for patients with stroke, O.V. Sirotkina - with congenital thrombophilia, Yu.A. Kudaev - with surgical treatment of PTE (Pulmonary Tromboembolism). The talk of intricacies of the vascular wall was delivered by A.O. Konradi. A.A. Ivanov stimulated the team approach by the lecture on the aneurysms treatment, and G.V. Berkovich reported on the radiology diagnostics of vascular pathology. The violations of cerebral venous circulation were covered by M.P. Topuzova, and chronic venous insufficiency and thrombosis – by N.N. Zherdev and T.V. Zakhmatova. O.P. Rotar completely convinced the participants to lead a healthy lifestyle in her lecture on the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. The seminar was finished with an interesting lecture by M.S. Golovkova about early diagnosis of cognitive dysfunction.

This format of classes was held for the first time and fully organized by the Council of Students and Young Scientists with the support of Almazov Center. I RUSSIAN-CHINESE CONGRESS OF NEUROSURGEONS

October 18-20, 2017
Ufa, Republic of Bashkortostan

On October 18-20, Ufa hosted the first Russian-Chinese Congress of Neurosurgeons. The conference was attended by more than 500 people, from all parts of Russia, as well as from China, Norway, and Canada.

Conference included plenary and sectional meetings, along with a competition of young scientists, in which I took part. It was the first time I participated in the conference held in different city. I like the city very much. It is very beautiful, comfortable and clean, multinational and friendly. People are very kind and smiling, always trying to help the entangled tourist and tell an interesting fact.

The conference was well organized and held in a congress hall. The venue was located in a very beautiful place: the Belaya River flows nearby, and a monument to the national hero Salavat Yulaev is close. The conference program was incredibly rich and, given that I am a pathologist, many reports were a discovery for me. I was surprised by the honesty of Moscow colleagues who talked openly about the complications of treatment and opportunities to fight them (they demonstrated carotid artery bleeding during transnasal operation).

Speeches of experts from China also were impressive, as medicine in China surprisingly combines the most advanced technologies and traditions. So, one of the speakers talked about the possibilities of treating gliomas with the help of long non-coding RNA and stem cells, and another about the possibilities of rehabilitation of patients using traditional Chinese medicine methods, such as acupuncture. Another impressive report from China was dedicated to the development of 3D printed simulation models in neurosurgery.

The section of young scientists was extremely variable. For me, as a representative of the fundamental discipline, it was very pleasant to get attention to my project from practicing neurosurgeons. The discussions were lively and energetic, despite the rules, and passed in a friendly atmosphere. I hope this congress will become an annual event and attract colleagues from all over the world to present interesting reports.

3RD INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE "VITAMIN D - MINIMUM, MAXIMUM, OPTIMUM"
September 22 - 23, 2017

On September 22 - 23, the European Vitamin D Association (EVIDAS) held the 3rd International conference "Vitamin D - minimum, maximum, optimum", which brought together experts from Poland, Russia, Israel, Canada, the USA, Ukraine, Lithuania, Ireland, Serbia, Austria, Hungary, Great Britain, Portugal, Belarus.

In welcome address, professor Paweł Płudowski (president of the Scientific and Organizing Committee) said that vitamin D plays a crucial role in the body development and functioning at all stages of human life.

The program of the conference was full of important reports. There were analyzed the epidemiological data on vitamin D and its importance from the prospects of neonatologists and pediatricians. Moreover, conference covered questions related to the role of vitamin D in diagnostics, prevention, correction, and treatment of its deficiency in metabolic syndrome, hypothyroidism, rickets, sarcopenia, diseases of musculoskeletal system, cardiovascular system, rheumatological diseases, chronic kidney disease, fertility and pregnancy. The importance of vitamin D in rehabilitation, in athletes and in elder people was also discussed.

At the conference, I presented poster report «Placental СYP24A1 gene expression expression and vitamin D saturation in preeclampsia». This research was conducted in collaboration with Scientific and Research laboratory of reproduction and woman's health on the base of the institute of Perinatology and Pediatrics (supervisor professor Zazerskaya I.E., MD) and the institute of Genetics (chief professor Kostareva A.A., PhD) of Almazov National Medical Research Centre.
Khazova E.L., researcher at the Scientific and Research laboratory of reproduction and woman's health also presented a poster report «The influence of the seasonal factor on the change in the concentration of calcidiol in pregnant women in St. Petersburg»

I would like to note that the pharmaceutical industry in Poland is more diverse, providing a variety of vitamin D forms for children, such as sprays and drops with a convenient dispenser, as well as different dosage for adults - 1000IU, 2000 IU, 4000 IU.

Participation of such kind of conferences gives the opportunity to communicate with the experts, expand knowledge and stimulate new ideas for the future studies.
For the chance to present our scientific results, I am thankful to the Almazov National Medical Research Centre and the Young Scientists Foundation.

INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS "THE NOTCH MEETING X"
October 1-5, 2017
Athens, Greece

Since 2007, Athens hosts a series of annual conferences devoted to the study of the Notch signaling pathway, which brings together researchers working on diverse issues and various experimental systems. This year, the tenth conference took place, highlighting the many advanced studies and discoveries concerning the Notch signaling pathway. The purpose of this event was to share experience, to look at the biology of Notch signaling from different angles, and also to see those who have long been engaged in this issue, and to get acquainted with the new players on this stage.

Dozens of laboratories around the world are engaged in the study of the Notch signaling pathway, and people who study the nuances of signaling activity form a rather narrow group of people who are familiar with each other. The conference was attended by 162 people from different countries of the world, they were scientists from America, Europe, Japan and China. The scientific program was divided into sections, combining oral reports on related subjects. In the beginning, we listened the brilliant lectures devoted to the molecular mechanisms of Notch, after that there were several sections that covered the participation of Notch signaling in the pathogenesis of various diseases and their therapies, including its role in the development of cardio-vascular pathologies and oncological diseases. In addition, for two days there was a special time for the poster session, where I presented my report about the role of Notch signaling pathway in the osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells. On the last day of the conference, a banquet was organized, at which people could communicate with each other at ease, find new collaborations, and for young scientists it was a great opportunity to get to know their senior colleagues and find a leader for scientific work.

I was pleasantly impressed by the friendly atmosphere of the conference and its high organization. It was clear that most people are familiar with each other, have joint projects and are one big community. There were many scientists with world names working in universities and organizations known throughout the world. To see inperson such brilliant scientists as Anna Bigas, Raphael Kopan, Freddy Radtke, Urban Lendhal, Deepak Srivastava and many others, was an incredibly exciting experience.

The report is written by Darya Semenova.
