Diabetes is a major challenge for health and development in the 21st century. This chronic and incurable disease is largely preventable, but remains responsible for millions of deaths annually and many more life-threatening complications. No country, rich or poor, is immune to this epidemic. According to Diabetes Atlas, the prevalence of diabetes in Rwanda is about 3.16% of the population, with 1,

918 diabetes related deaths per year. The Rwanda Diabetes Association is a non-governmental organization that was created in 1997 with the mission to promote diabetes care, prevent and cure diabetes in Rwanda, support diabetics and their families and to strengthen global efforts to advocate for diabetics. The Rwanda Diabetes Association joins efforts in providing care with its national and international partners, including the Ministry of Health of Rwanda, International Diabetes Federation from Belgium, Life For A Child from Australia, World Diabetes Foundation of Norwegian, Insulin Zum Leben from Germany, Team Type 1 from USA, University of Pittsburg, Partners In Health (Inshuti mu Buzima) and Marjorie’s Fund from USA. The message from the chair of Rwanda Diabetes Association: It is both an honor and a privilege to address you today as we gather to confront the pressing challenges of diabetes in 2025. Our journey in combating this disease has been one of determination, innovation, and resilience. But as we stand here today, it is clear that our mission is far from complete.

Diabetes is a growing public health challenge in Rwanda, reflecting global trends. Contributing factors such as urbanization, lifestyle changes, and limited awareness have exacerbated this trend. While we have made commendable strides in improving access to healthcare, providing essential medicines, and raising awareness, significant gaps remain. Rural communities, in particular, face barriers to diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care. The cost of managing diabetes, both for individuals and the healthcare system, is substantial and unsustainable without innovative approaches.

Key Challenges in 2025:

1.Increasing Prevalence: The number of people living with diabetes continues to rise, and many remain undiagnosed. Early detection and timely intervention are critical.

2. Limited Access to Care: Access to affordable diabetes care and medication, especially insulin, remains a challenge for many Rwandans. Geographic and economic disparities further exacerbate this issue.

3. Awareness and Education: Despite ongoing campaigns, misconceptions and a lack of understanding about diabetes persist. This hinders prevention efforts and leads to delays in seeking care.

4. Integration of Technology: As digital health tools emerge globally, we must ensure that these innovations are accessible and relevant to our context, bridging rather than widening the healthcare gap.

Rwanda Diabetes Association remains steadfast in its commitment to improving the lives of those affected by diabetes. Our vision is a Rwanda where every individual can access timely, affordable, and high-quality diabetes care. To achieve this, we must work collaboratively and innovate boldly.
