Over the past ten years, has made remarkable progress in health by placing the health and well-being of the Rwandan people at the forefront of the agenda. The health sector continues to fight for Universal Health Coverage (UHC) to ensure preventive, curative and supportive care for all. However, while the burden of disease is increasingly brought under control, challenges remain, particularly among non-communicable diseases.
President Kagame spoke of the important role the new center will play in the lives of cancer patients, “now many more Rwandans will be able to get the care they need with their families close by,” he said .
The newly completed radiation therapy unit is comprised of two linear accelerators using Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT), which delivers radiation directly to cancerous tumors, and a scanner for treatment planning purposes. So far, 350 patients have been treated, and of the 350 patients treated, more than 57% were covered by "Mutuelle de Santé" while others were privately funded. Currently, the center sees an average of 50 patients per day with the capacity to treat up to 150 patients per day at full capacity.
