Last week marked another important milestone for the Rwanda–Swiss Heart Project.

A total of 33 patients were treated, including 18 in cardiac surgery and 15 in the catheterization laboratory. The surgical procedures were carried out jointly by the Rwandan and Swiss teams, while intensive care management was led with remarkable dedication and expertise through close collaboration between both teams.

Patients across a wide spectrum of complexity were cared for. One newborn underwent an arterial switch operation at 9 days of life. The most complex patient presented with heterotaxy syndrome with left isomerism and a partial atrioventricular canal defect, and successfully underwent a complete repair with a Mustard procedure. Another patient with double outlet right ventricle associated with transposition of the great arteries benefited from a double rotation procedure, an extremely complex surgical technique.

Our greatest success came with the final patient of the week: a newborn who arrived in emergency at CHUK with transposition of the great arteries, a critical condition requiring immediate intervention. The baby was transferred to King Faisal Hospital in a record 35 minutes and underwent the first Rashkind procedure ever performed in Rwanda. This life-saving intervention was carried out by Dr Gérard Misago, our Pediatric cardiologist, together with Dr Julie Wacker from Geneva, and made it possible to save this child’s life.

The week was rich in learning, hard work, uncertainty, and ultimately hope. Above all, it demonstrated the extraordinary power of teamwork in advancing cardiac care for the children of Rwanda.
