In commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, IRCAD Africa dedicated this day to remembrance, reflection, and unity.
The commemoration began with a meaningful conversation led by Serge Rwigamba from Aegis Trust at the Kigali Genocide Memorial, focusing on history, leadership, unity, reconciliation, and the continued responsibility to uphold truth and build lasting peace among Rwandans.
He reflected on the role of leadership during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, including how some doctors misused their positions to harm rather than heal. He contrasted this with the progress made since then, highlighting the vital role institutions like IRCAD Africa play today in advancing ethical practice, restoring purpose in medicine, and contributing to a future grounded in care, integrity, and healing.
Dr. Charles Nsengiyumva, our CEO, underscored the importance of remaining vigilant in the digital space, particularly in confronting and countering genocide denial on social media. He emphasized our collective responsibility to safeguard the truth, challenge misinformation, and ensure that the history of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi is preserved with accuracy and respect.
This was followed by a visit to the Ntarama Genocide Memorial, where IRCAD Africa laid wreaths in honor of the lives lost during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. In solemn reflection, the team paid tribute to the victims and stood in solidarity with survivors.
As we mark Kwibuka 32, we remember those we lost, stand united as Rwandans, and reaffirm our commitment to preserving memory and shaping a future rooted in dignity and togetherness.
