Non-iatrogenic nasal synechiae are bands of scar tissue that form naturally between structures inside the nose due to trauma, such as physical injury or chronic irritation, rather than from surgical intervention. These adhesions can cause nasal obstruction, a blocked or runny nose, and other symptoms because they form a bridge that impedes airflow. While most common after surgery (iatrogenic), non-iatrogenic synechiae develop when injured surfaces inside the nose heal by sticking together.
Causes

Physical injuries: Trauma from accidents like sports injuries, falls, or facial impact can damage the nasal lining and lead to scar tissue formation.

Chronic irritation: Long-term exposure to irritants such as dust, smog, strong odors, or cigarette smoke can cause inflammation that leads to the formation of synechiae.

Nose-picking: Chronic, forceful picking of the nose can cause direct trauma that leads to the development of adhesions
