People with avoidant personality disorder experience acute emotions of inadequacy and respond maladaptively by avoiding situations in which they may be negatively evaluated.
Individuals with avoidant personality disorder desire social engagement yet fear trusting their well-being in others' hands.
Because these individuals limit their interactions with others, they are typically socially isolated and lack a support system that could assist them in times of need.
According to the DSM-5, the symptoms of AVPD must be consistent and include at least four of the following criteria:
• Avoidance of activities involving significant social contact out of fear of criticism, disapproval, or rejection
• Unwillingness to become involved with others unless you are certain they will like you
• Holding back in intimate relationships out of fear of being ridiculed or humiliated
• Preoccupation with criticism or rejection in social situations
• Feelings of being socially inept, unappealing, or inferior to others
• Hesitation to take risks or do new things out of fear of embarrassment
Common Symptoms:
Most often have these tendencies:
- A need to be well-liked
- Feelings of inadequacy
- Easily hurt by criticism
- Avoids intimate relationships
- Self-isolation
- Extremely self-conscious
- Avoids making decisions
- Avoids interactions in work settings
- Doesn't initiate social contact
- Keeps personal info to self
If not addressed, avoidant personality disorder can have a significant influence on your day-to-day life over time. Psychotherapy, particularly cognitive-behavioral approaches, may be helpful treatment options.
