Glossitis

Definition:
is an inflammation of the tongue either it’s inflammatory in origin of particularly inflamed.

Causes of glossitis:

1- Common causes
• Anaemia
• Vitamin B group deficiencies (especially B12)
• Erythema migrans
• Candidosis
•median rhomboid glossitis
• Lichen planus

2- Rare causes
• Bacterial infection
• Scarlet fever
• Kawasaki disease
• Glucagon secreting pancreatic tumours
• Syphilitic glossitis of tertiary syphilis

Clinical features:
1- Erythematous changes
2- pain
3- burning sensation
4- tongue atrophy in specific disease

Treatment:
Depends on type of cause.

Ludwig Angina

Life-threatening cellulitis of the
soft tissue involving the floor of
the mouth and neck which usually
arises from the lower second or
third molars.

⚪️Spaces Involved :
Submandibular, Sublingual,
and Submental spaces

🔴 Risk involved :
Rapid spread and airway
obstruction

🔘Clinical Features:

Severe swelling with elevation
and displacement of the tongue

Tense, hard bilateral swelling
of the submandibular region

Trismus, drooling and difficulty
swallowing

🟠Management:

Immediate admission to hospital

Securing the airway by
tracheostomy if necessary

Procurement of a sample for
culture and sensitivity testing

Aggressive antibiotic treatment
and Drainage of the swelling to
reduce pressure.
