It’s World Book Day! 📚

We ❤️ this day because it helps to promote the importance of reading for pleasure.

Did you know that spending just 5-10 minutes a day reading and sharing stories with children can make a crucial difference to their future success (and it’s fun for all involved too)?

We recently bought the children’s book to check what all the hype was about. It’s a cute book about change and all the excitement and worry that comes with it.

Coincidently it was farm week this week at Messy Cubs so we enjoyed some farm play and reading before all our friends came to class. Swipe for speechie tips on how to share this book with your child at any age ➡️

Does your child like playing with water? Do you have a cheap laminator? Then try this fun little hack.

Bath time is the perfect opportunity to sneak a little extra learning into your little one’s day (while still having loads of fun!)

All you have to do is print some pictures and then laminate them to make them waterproof. For extra durability, you could laminate them twice. Cut out the pieces (leave a large edge to keep water out) and use the bath water to stick the laminated pictures to the bath or tiles.

Ideas for bath time sticker play:
🛁 A dinosaur scene
🛁 Silly faces
🛁 A farm scene
🛁 An underwater scene
🛀 Vehicles

Speechie tip: Talk about what your child is doing and label what they see

Looking for a quick, fuss free activity to keep your little one busy? Then give this play idea a go.

👶🏻: 2 years +

💫: Works on language skills, fine motor skills, role play, social skills

⚠️: Please be mindful if your child is still mouthing toys/objects. Large amounts of salt consumption is not suitable for young babies and children.

Milestone Monday

My little one says “poon” for “spoon”, Is this normal?

When a child simplifies a consonant cluster, they are using a phonological speech process called ‘Cluster Reduction’.

As children are learning to talk, they often simplify adult speech to make it easier for themselves as they learn to use all their speech sounds to communicate. Usually Cluster Reduction corrects itself as your child’s speech matures.

Top Tips:
1. Emphasise the sounds in words but keep it natural “It’s a SPider”
2. Look at minimal pair pictures together and see if your child can hear the difference between words e.g glove/love, ski/key. There are lots of different ways you can use these pictures. You could play snap with them, label one of the pictures and ask your child to post the picture that they hear in a post box or you could add paper clips to them and go fishing!
3. Play games with consonants already built into it. Talk about what your doing in a natural context. This helps with the generalisation of sounds. Play STop and Go while playing with cars, Ask for GLue when making a craft together, Build a TRack and play with TRains etc.

If Cluster Reduction continues after 4/5, then this means your child’s speech may be delayed and you should seek help from your local Speech and Language Therapy team. Alternatively DM me for advice and support.

The early years is an important time for brain development. From birth to 5, your child’s brain is growing more rapidly than it ever will again.

Reading, playing, singing and talking with your child is invaluable ‘food’ for the brain!

Reading with your child exposes them to so many new vocabulary words that they wouldn’t hear in a typical day. But, did you know that not all vocabulary words are created equally? Vocabulary can be split into three tiers. Swipe to find out more ➡️

Reading makes it easy to introduce so many new words and concepts to your child.

Did you know that when you read the same book to your child over and over again, you’re actually preparing them for academic success?

Research shows that there are many benefits to reading the same books repeatedly:
📖It builds your child’s vocabulary and understanding of words. Children who have a strong comprehension of vocabulary, will have a greater ability to comprehend new text
📖Your child learns how words sound and connect to each other
📖Your child learns how words join together to form phrases and sentences
📖When children are learning to read, they are learning skills that help them decode and sound out words
📖It helps your child to comprehend the storyline and different components of a story

🐾 What books are you reading for the millionth time?
