Lately I tear up a lot. I can’t tell if it’s perimenopause or the fact that we are standing on the precipice of a seismic shift in our family. Likely it’s both. You turning 18 means you are officially an adult now, and soon to be leaving the nest.
They say biology is destiny, and I believe it. You have been who you are since the day you were born. Bossy, kind, fiercely intelligent, intensely loyal, wholeheartedly determined and quietly funny. Very funny.
You know those Matchbox cars you rev up and they take off, zooming quickly out of sight? That’s how I’ve always felt about parenting you, it was just my job to wind you up and then sit back and watch you GO. A pint-sized powerhouse who I know will succeed in her mission to change the world.
I hope I’ve imparted at least a few lessons somewhere along the way:
1. Hard work is what will set you apart.
2. Dogs and dumplings are the most perfect creations.
3. Little moments of JOY go a long way.
4. Clutter is the enemy.
5. Sometimes when you let your mind wander, the magic happens.
And you’ve taught me many lessons too:
1. Doing the right thing is easy.
2. Have more faith in myself.
3. Midnight is the best time to talk.
4. Cereal is best eaten in bed.
5. Kindness wins.
Happy 18th birthday Jemma! From one mama bear 🐻 to her cub 🐻, I LOVE you.
I cannot wait to see where your path takes you.
