IAS Psychotherapy UKCP registered psychoanalytic psychotherapist

I am a UKCP registered psychoanalytic/psychodynamic therapist in private practice just outside of Welwyn Garden City. I began practising in 2011 and since then, have worked with individuals (aged 16 and up) on a range of mental health issues. I’m particularly interested in intergenerational trauma, how we cope with grief and mourning and more generally, how the sociopolitical/sociocultural context

s we live in affect how we move through the world. My intent is to use this page to share articles and posts (usually with psychological relevance) that interest me, but I often find inspiration, tranquility and relief in many of my other loves - literature, poetry, art, nature and funny stuff (I’m a great believer in not taking oneself too seriously). So, this page may often present a mish-mash of these, but I hope you will find something worthwhile in it for you.

29% of men have been to therapy, compared to 41% of women, according to our Public Perceptions Survey.

Of those who've had therapy, 73% of men and 73% of women say it was helpful.

So what’s getting in the way of more men seeking therapy? 🤔

Stigma, social expectations, and discomfort around opening up all play a part. But attitudes are slowly shifting.

This Men’s Health Month, we’re taking a closer look at how men view therapy, and how those views are changing.

ℹ️🌿 WHAT IS RETRAUMATIZATION ANYWAY? |

Working with trauma can be complex, intense, draining, energizing, rewarding, and invigorating all at the same time. It is hard work, but it is so rewarding to see clients move out of the grips of their past into the expansion of their present and future.

One thing that makes trauma treatment so intense is the connection between our past and our present. It is easy for clients to lose connection to their present and slip into their past.

We spend a great deal of time helping clients develop the skills needed to explore their past while staying in their present. You might have heard the phrase, “separating the then from the now”. It is a very common phrase used in trauma treatment circles, and it can be helpful to clients who don’t register the difference between “then” and “now.”

The Government has announced plans to expand Mental Health Support Teams to reach all pupils by 2030.

But around 730,000 children each year could still miss out on the support they need.

Without trained school counsellors in place, many young people will continue to fall between the gaps.

Far from cultural add-ons, these traditions reveal how Western psychology’s assumptions about mind, health, and healing may be too narrow to serve a diverse world.

"Forgiving one’s mother is a particularly difficult task, because without mother love a child has to invent everything from scratch. For women especially this becomes an exhausting enterprise. How to be female, how to love, how to be a mother (or whether to avoid motherhood in order not to repeat history) become issues that can haunt one for decades."
