Alexander Technique Conversations #8 is out!
https://youtu.be/hzRVJmHzOpc

In this conversation I speak with Peter Ribeaux, co-head of training of The Centre for the Alexander Technique in Fulham, London.

Peter has been an Alexander Teacher for over 50 years. He has given workshops in Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Japan, Israel, Switzerland and the USA and has taught the Alexander Technique in a number of different settings ranging from the performance arts to the aerospace industry. Formerly a university lecturer in organisational psychology, he has also been a council member of STAT and is currently a member of the Moderators Panel of STAT.

Peter and Ellie Ribeaux were trained by Patrick Macdonald, who was trained by FM Alexander himself, and ran one of three training courses which immediately succeeded Alexander’s death in 1955. They have both been influenced by a number of other first generation Alexander Teachers including Peter Scott, Walter Carrington, Bill and Marjory Barlow, Dick and Elisabeth Walker, Irene Stewart and Eric de Peyer. They were the longest established Alexander Technique teacher trainers in the UK, opening our course in September 1984 until They closed it in 2017. In that time they graduated some hundred teachers who work in establishments as varied as multinational corporations and drama and music colleges all over the world. The Centre for the Alexander Technique is still situated in their house in Fulham near the River Thames in south-west London.

In conversation with Penelope Easten - Alexander Technique and Chronic Fatigue
https://youtu.be/5uDWjuX4pP8

Penelope read zoology at Cambridge university, then qualified in Alexander technique in 1989. She then took lessons with Miss Goldie, who had worked alongside Alexander for 30 years.

Goldie remodelled Penelope’s understanding of the technique, prompting a thirty-year journey to understand the differences and power of Miss Goldie’s work. It took her to many other teachers, including Erika Whittaker, and to scientific and alternative avenues of exploration and understanding. During two separate years, Penelope was unable to walk with chronic fatigue syndrome.

These years became quiet retreats, deepening her work. With the illness gone completely, she has regained resilience, strength, and fitness, particularly through using the Initial Alexander technique with Jeando Masoero, and The Embodied Present Process with Philip Shepherd. She has taught ‘Miss Goldie’ workshops internationally since 2004, beginning at the Oxford congress in 2004, and was a continuous learning presenter at the 2022 Berlin Congress. During Covid 19 she ran Training to Teach Online, a detailed ten module course.

Her extensive book, The Alexander technique, The Twelve Fundamentals of Integrated Movement, was published in March 2021.

In this conversation I speak with Judith Kleinman, musician and AT teacher in London.
https://youtu.be/SUBQ1v8qGLY

Having originally trained as a musician at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Judith was a member of English National Opera and CLS and performed with LSO, London Classical Players, the National Theatre and the London Jupiter Orchestra. The mind body connection involved in practising and performing music fascinated her. In order to explore this connection more deeply Judith trained to be an Alexander teacher with Mr Macdonald and Shoshanna Kaminitz qualifying in 1988 and went on to train to be a Tai Chi and Yoga teacher in London.

While the Alexander Technique can have many uses and applications, Judith’s career as an Alexander teacher has been focused on integrating the work into educational and performance practices. This stems from a belief that the technique works fundamentally on establishing the possibility of change, a crucial element in learning how to learn and igniting creativity. She is part of the Alexander team at the Royal College of Music and head of department at the Junior Royal Academy of Music. She is also an assistant head of training at LCATT The London Centre for Alexander Technique and Training. Recently she has been a visiting teacher at The London School of Musical Theatre.

For the last twenty years Judith has collaborated with Sue Merry to build connections between the worlds of Alexander and Education and create a thoughtful training for AT teachers interested in working in that world. The Developing Self has become a platform for videos and discussions about Alexander in Education. These, including the talks of the first virtual Alexander conference 2020 can be found at www.thedevelopingself.net

Alexander Technique Conversations: Paul Moore

https://youtu.be/oGNCBUWX_xk?si=JSmpSOzuLO45jcew

In this conversation I speak with Paul Moore, an accomplished double bass player and Alexander Technique teacher based in London.

Paul first heard about the Alexander Technique in the 1970's whilst studying the double bass at Trinity College of Music. Musicians, singers and actors often had lessons in the Alexander technique and teachers were employed by Music Colleges at that time.

Subsequent lessons led to a realisation of the relevance of the technique in modern living and Paul decided to train to become a teacher in 1990. He completed the 3 year training course at the North London Training School and became a full member of STAT in 1993.

Paul has worked extensively with young musicians, having been employed by the specialist music department at Wells Cathedral School for 5 years and also at the Royal College of Music Junior Department. He has been teaching at the Royal Academy of Music since 1994 where he became Head of the Alexander Technique Department in 1999. He teaches at Anthony Kingsley’s Alexander Teacher Training School (ATTS) in London Golders Green, helping a new generation to pass on the benefits of the technique.

In Conversation with Ted McNamara
https://youtu.be/Fp64Qt3-xSI

In this conversation, I speak with Ted McNamara, accomplished Alexander Technique teacher based in London, who trained with Patrick Macdonald and worked many of the first generation teachers for many years.

From 1981 to 2005, he studied the Alexander Technique, primarily under the direction and guidance of Mr Patrick Macdonald, Miss Margaret Goldie, Mr Walter Carrington, and Wilfred and Marjory Barlow, each of whom studied and trained directly under F.M. Alexander.

He was an assistant teacher to Dr Barlow at The Alexander Institute from 1986 to 1991, and has worked at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (Junior and Senior Schools) from 1995 to 2014.

In the last two decades, while maintaining a private teaching practice, he has taught in Alexander teacher-training schools in London and travelled internationally to teach and work through the medium of the Alexander Technique, as well as dance, Tai Chi, Ba-Kua and movement.

Ellie Ribeaux has been teaching the Alexander Technique for over 50 years. After training she studied biodynamic psychology with Gerda Boysen as well as attending courses in a variety of personal development methods. Formerly a biology teacher, she has taught and given workshops in the Technique to people from many walks of life in a number of different countries, including Denmark, Germany and Israel.

We explore how she made her way from a Kibbutz in Israel as a young woman to London. She trained with Patrick Macdonald, who was trained by FM Alexander himself, and opened her own school in cooperation with her husband, Peter Ribeaux.

The Centre for the Alexander Technique is still situated in their house in Fulham near the River Thames in south-west London.

In this interview, I speak with John Crawford, a professional violinist and Alexander Technique teacher whose career bridges the worlds of classical music and somatic practice.

After graduating from the Royal College of Music, John spent many years as a professional violinist, including ten years with the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

An increasing interest in problems of coordination experienced by many musicians led him to train as an A.T. teacher with Ellie and Peter Ribeaux. Since graduating from there, he has combined a performing career with an extensive teaching practice. He is on the staff at Trinity College of Music, the Purcell School, and the Royal College junior department, and was an assistant at the Ribeaux’s school and has been teaching for many years at Anthony Kingsley's Alexander Teacher Training School in London.

Excited to share the first in my "Alexander Technique Conversations" series featuring Anthony Kingsley, head of training at The Alexander Teacher Training School (ATTS) in London, where I completed my own teacher training.

Anthony shares the story of how he discovered the technique, his formative experiences in training, and the evolution of his understanding and practice. As a trained psychotherapist, he developed a unique trauma-informed and emotionally literate approach to the Alexander Technique. We speak about the personal motivations, challenges, and insights that shaped his approach to teaching and his visions for the future.

Feedback from my clients:
“I find Ruth to be a calm and warm person. Her way of using the Alexander Technique makes me feel safe and heard. It makes me appreciate the impact of this type of work not just on my body and posture but on my mental and emotional health. I always feel more present after a session with her, as if I processed stuff that I didn’t even realise was there before the session. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her to friends and family. Thank you, Ruth.”
