Congratulation to Marimo for presenting her work at ASIT.

Marimo’s project investigated the use of 3D printing to plan complex craniofacial reconstruction. Skull and soft tissue structures were segmented from raw CT head scans using computer-assisted design software and synthesised to a 3D model using a variety of materials and 3D printing technologies.

The models underwent quantitative and qualitative evaluation for clinical accuracy and usefulness for patient communication and surgical planning. Both surgeons and patients found the models to be highly useful in communicating the patient’s own anatomical dimensions and the proposed surgical plan.

Marimo has contributed immensely to the groundworks of establishing a 3D printing infrastructure at the Charles Wolfson Centre.

Congratulations to Mr Edward Bollen for his recent presentation at the ASiT/PLASTA 2023 Hackathon on Innovation in Education at The Charles Wolfson Centre.

Edward has been won grants for the Charles Wolfson Centre from BSSH, ASiT, ASME and RCSEd to further research in surgical education. This work will help to define the roles of three-dimensional printing and mixed reality in plastic surgical simulation training.

Congratulations to Dr Jasmine May Yen Wai for completing her MSc at the Charles Wolfson Centre. Originally from Malaysia, she obtained her MBChB from the University of Manchester and completed her foundation training in Northern Ireland. After working in private healthcare, she chose to undertake a Masters in Burns, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at UCL.

Her thesis investigated the secretome of adipose derived stem cells (ADSCs) on extracellular matrix remodelling (ECM) in acute radiation-induced fibrosis. This in vitro study examined whether factors secreted by ADSCs (via conditioned media and co-culture) exerted an anti-fibrotic effect on human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs) by looking at common ECM markers affiliated with fibrosis.

The Charles Wolfson centre is committed to improving the treatment of RIF patients through research.

Congratulations to Alexandra Beedie for completing her Masters in Nanotechnology and Regenerative Medicine. Having completed her medical degree from the university of Otago in 2018, she took a break from clinical medicine to come to UCL and complete her Masters.

Working with the Charles Wolfson research centre, her thesis was on stem cell enriched autologous lipotransfer for orofacial fibrosis in systemic sclerosis. The aim of this project was to investigate if there was an improvement in clinical outcome for patients, and if so, if this effect was mediated by adipose derived stem cells within the graft.

Well done to Caroline (Xiangmei), an NHS doctor who recently completed her Burns, Plastic and Reconstructive MSc at the Charles Wolfson centre. Her surgical project was titled ‘Investigating the Immunomodulatory Role of Adipose-derived Stem Cells in Radiation-induced Fibrosis’. The aim of her project was to explore the immunomodulatory effect of adipose-derived stem cells (ADSC) in radiation induced fibrosis (RIF) in vitro. Previous studies of ADSC have shown immunomodulatory capabilities in reducing inflammation and therefore reducing fibrosis.

The Charles Wolfson centre is committed to improving the treatment of RIF patients through research.

Congratulations to Ahmad Abul, for completing his MSc at the Charles Wolfson Centre. Originally from Kuwait, he recently completed his medical degree at University of Leeds in 2022, choosing to undertake a masters in Surgical and Interventional sciences directly after.

His project was titled ‘Adipose derived stem cell enriched autologous fat transfer for radiation induced fibrosis in head and neck cancer patients’

The project involved validating and assessing different non-invasive methodologies to detect radiation induced fibrosis and seeing whether these modalities are able to detect a difference before and after autologous fat transfer. Fat transfer offers promising capabilities in managing radiation induced fibrosis for head and neck cancer patients.

This project exemplifies how the Charles Wolfson Centre works to help patients with radiation induced fibrosis.

The Charles Wolfson Centre conducts research into the use of 3D printing for complex cranio-facial reconstruction. Here you can see the 3-D print of a patient’s facial bones after major trauma. Models like these can enhance patient-surgeon communication but also facilitate seamless collaboration between surgeons during planning for operations. Thank you to our kind patient for allowing us to use this image for research and education.
