The famous Greek philosopher, Aristotle, said, “We are the sum of our actions, and therefore our habits make all the difference.” As such, it is important to think about how we acquire our habits in the first place.
Understanding how habits form:
• Humans are creatures of habit; we do not like change and tend to resist it unless we are forced into it.
• 40-80 percent of our behaviour as adults is performed on autopilot.
• A habit consists of the three Rs: Reminder, Routine, Reward.
• Habits free your brain for more learning.
• Brains have a reward-based learning system. The more rewarding the behaviour is, the stronger the habit.
• The brain sets up a hierarchy of behaviours based on their reward value. The behaviour with the biggest reward is the one we tend to act on. This is built into our genetic code and goes back to the days when our ancestors lived in harsh environments and had to seekout the most calorie dense foods they could find to survive. While they feasted on nature’s seasonal candy, such as wild berries and honey, our readily available go-to treats are invariably unhealthy!
