The Richmond Herbalist will be at the Duckpond Market in Richmond this Saturday 5th July. The popular “Times of the Day” range, including Morning Focus, Afternoon Flow and Evening Stillness, will be available, featuring products to support your energy throughout the day. Morning Focus is formulated to help you get the most out of your morning by improving focus and providing gentle mental stimulation.
Create a morning ritual for yourself. Draw yourself a deep bath and add a handful or two of your Morning Focus bath salts. Relax for 20 minutes to allow the salts and oils to work their magic. The bath salts are formulated with Magnesium Sulphate (Epsom Salts) which are rich in magnesium to relax the body, Himalayan salts to purify and detoxify, and dried rosemary needles which are stimulating and improve concentration. Essential oils of Lemon Eucalyptus Grapefruit and Basil are invigorating and reviving. Fragments of rosemary needles will float gently in the water and the salts will dissolve, toning and relaxing the body (however, if you prefer, these can be rinsed off after your bath before drying off)
Boil the kettle and add 2 teaspoons of your Morning Focus tea to your teapot. Allow it to steep for 5-10 minutes for therapeutic benefit. Pour yourself a cup and savour it. The organic green tea is low in caffeine and provides sustained concentration without the jitteriness associated with coffee. The Damask rose petals are fragrant, mood-lifting and sweet, tempering the bitterness of the green tea. The blackberry leaves are aromatic, anti-inflammatory and cardio-protective.
Revived and focussed, enter your workspace and use the Morning Flow Aromatic Room Spray, formulated with Rosemary aromatic water, Witch Hazel water and essential oils of Lemon, Basil, Cypress and Pink Peppercorn. This revitalising, invigorating and mentally stimulating spray is intended for use to signify the start of your working day, to define your workspace and to improve concentration.

Tomorrow is the Summer Solstice. The weather is reflecting this pivotal time of year and I have prepared some new products to help with the heat and energy of the season. Firstly, a Midsummer tea, featuring three wonderful plant allies that flower around this halfway point in the year. This tea harnesses the energy of Midsummer and contains Lime Flower, Calendula, and Saint John’s Wort. A beautiful golden blend, this tea will help you adjust to the energy of this magical time of year. Secondly, a cooling floral spray, containing the fragrant essential oils; Lemon Verbena, Peppermint, Neroli, and Geranium, all of which beautify the skin, as well as providing refrigerant action to help combat the heat and pollution of these humid London days. As a bonus they can all act as insect repellents, only without the harsh chemicals of store bought ones. Finally, an aromatherapy roll-on, designed to combat nervous tension and the summer heat of London nights; it contains Lemongrass, Mandarin, and Petitgrain. Uplifting, cooling and anxiety-relieving it is designed to help cope with hot tube journeys and sticky London nights.

All of these products and all of your Richmond Herbalist favourites will displayed at Duckpond Market in Richmond tomorrow from 11-4:30, and I look forward to seeing you all there.

Just prepped my Queen of Hungary Water which should be ready in a couple of weeks . Reputedly formulated in the 1300s by the Queen’s alchemist, this is a deeply aromatic floral water containing lemon balm, chamomile, rose petals, calendula, comfrey, rosemary and lemon peel. It is left to steep in apple cider vinegar for several weeks, then once strained, is diluted with rose water, witch hazel or indeed your aromatic water of choice. It is highly anti-inflammatory, full of nutrients to feed the skin, the perfect beautifying toner to add to your skincare routine or for use as a hair rinse, or eau de cologne. Message me if you’d like to know more or test the finished product in June

I love watching my seedling develop and lose their baby seedling leaves. This beautiful and unusual leaf shaped seedling belongs to Tagetes or French Marigold, the more exotic cousin of Calendula, the Pot Marigold. I’m not sure what plant medicine I will use the Tagetes for yet but I love using the essential oil for foot massage oils. It is a lovely rich orange colour, strongly scented and highly anti-inflammatory. I use it (with Pot Marigold) to reduce the pain and swelling of bunions and osteo-arthritic toe joints. Message me if you’d like to try this magical essential oil in a topical blend.

Melissa officinalis (Lemon Balm) is a wonderful plant ally that makes the perfect addition to any herb garden. Easy to grow from seed, it makes a delicious tea either hot or iced. It banishes low mood and anxiety and can help excess adrenaline to leave the body. It helps soothe and settle an irritable stomach. A diaphoretic, it can help to break the fevers of colds and flues. It is also the best herb to treat herpes simplex, the cold sore. Contact me if you’d like to try Lemon Balm in a tea or tincture, or try growing it yourself and let me know what you think.

Beltane blessings! It is May Day and the Hawthorn’s mayflowers are in full bloom to celebrate . Traditionally used to decorate the maypole, the hawthorn tree has been associated with May Day, fertility, protective power and magic for milennia. In pre-Christian May Day celebrations, the May Queen was crowned with hawthorn and ritually slaughtered. Also known as the fairy bush, it is considered good luck to grow Hawthorn close to your front door but don’t bring the flowers inside as it may presage a death in the family (apparently the mayflowers contain trimethylamine, the same chemical formed when animal tissue decays, so they literally have a ‘death stench’). In Herbal medicine, we use Crataegus (hawthorn) to support the cardiovascular system. It is a wonderful tonic for the aging heart and daily sips of Hawthorn brandy are encouraged to support the function of the heart and lower raised blood pressure. It is also a plant ally for the broken hearted and grieving. Contact me if you think a tonic including Hawthorn could help you.

Nature is clever and produces our plant allies when we most need them. Here we have a verdant mass of nettles and cleavers. Cleavers is a wonderful plant for this time of year and can be used to detoxify now, the perfect time for spring cleansing. Just pluck a handful of these sticky stems and pop them in a jug of water overnight. Drink the following day - the water will taste fresh and green like cucumber - and allow it to improve lymphatic function and cleanse your blood. Next to it is nettles. Nettles are such a fantastic plant ally and have so many benefits. At this time of year they form a key part of hay fever tonics and teas due to antihistamine action. They are high in minerals and very nutritious - if you can find a clean patch, put some gloves on and pick the tops - use them in tea or lightly cook them to make a spring tonic. They are particularly effective for anaemia due to their high iron content. Contact me if you think either of these herbs are calling you, and we can discuss a bespoke tea or tonic for you 🌿

Angelica archangelica is something I always want to have in my garden, despite the fact it is a biennial. Here it is in its second year beginning to send out its beautiful umbel. Traditionally, the root was candied and used to decorate cakes and puddings. In Herbal Medicine, all parts of the plant are used. As a warming remedy, it improves blood flow and can help with conditions of vascular insufficiency in the hands and feet (Raynaud’s syndrome) . Its warmth can also help with the expectoration of the phlegm and mucus common in respiratory diseases. It is also a very useful tonic for indigestion and flatulence. It is said that Angelica was revealed to a monk in a dream as a cure for the plague. All parts of the plant were believed effective against evil spirits and witchcraft. Grow it in your garden to energetically protect your boundaries. When it has turned over, collect its abundant seeds to sow in your garden for next year. Contact me to find out if Angelica would suit you in your very own bespoke herbal tonic.

My seed grown valerian is thriving. This is a wonderful calming and relaxing herb , a great addition to night time teas to encourage deep sleep. Beware though as it does have a paradoxical effect on some people, making them feel more wired. Do contact me for any other suggestions of soporific herbs, or try my own bespoke sleep blend 💤
