We've updated our childbirth care guidelines with new advice on managing fluids during labour.

Our guidance now recommends that women should drink when thirsty but avoid excessive fluid intake, which can lower sodium levels in the blood (known as hyponatraemia). This condition can affect both mother and baby.

Healthcare professionals are advised to monitor fluid intake and output in certain situations to help ensure safety during labour.

This technology reduces the need for finger prick tests and injections while helping prevent dangerous blood sugar fluctuations.

As one parent told us: "It's hard to put into words how life-changing this has been."
