Stillness in Motion

“The river runs, yet holds its calm,
A whisper soft, a steady psalm.
Each ripple speaks, yet nothing’s said,
A silence flows where footsteps tread.

The world spins fast, a constant tide,
But in your gaze, the storms subside.

“How to find balance?”…

We are trying to achieve it from the moment we start crawling. Through our life we are trying to find it in our every day lives, work, relationships, hobbies, sports and in everything we do.

A few words about balance in movement.
While we perform different physical activities balance helps us to maintain control of our body’s position and alignment. It involves coordinating muscles, joints, and our centre of gravity to remain stable, whether we are standing still, walking, dancing, exercising or in any motion. Balance in movement is crucial for our physical performance as it’s preventing falls, and help us to avoid injuries.

Some key elements involved:
1. Centre of Gravity(COG)
Point where our body’s mass is evenly distributed. Keeping your COG over our base of support is essential for maintaining balance.
2. Base of Support
This is the area beneath us that supports our body.
3. Proprioception
Proprioception is our body’s ability to sense its position in space. It involves sensory feedback from muscles, tendons, and joints and helping us adjust our movements and maintain balance without consciously thinking about it.
4. Core Strength
A strong core is essential for maintaining balance in movement. The core acts as the foundation for almost every motion and helps stabilise our body.
5. Coordination and Flexibility
Good coordination between different body parts and the ability to move fluidly enhances balance. Flexibility, particularly in the lower body and hips, allows us to make adjustments and shifts in position when balancing.

Flexibility in dance as well as in life, is an essential quality which can enhance our ability to adapt, grow, and thrive.

In dance, flexibility is not just about our physical ability to stretch and achieve greater range of motion. It also symbolizes our openness to new movements, adaptability to different styles, as well as capacity to overcome challenges. Physical flexibility allows us to execute moves with grace and precision. Where mental flexibility is enables us to stay open to feedback, learn from our mistakes, and adjust our technique and skills when needed. It also fosters creativity, as it allows to explore new ways of moving and interpreting music.

In life, flexibility plays very similar role. Life often requires us to navigate changes, face challenges, adapt to new environments or situations. When we more flexible mentally and emotionally, the better equipped we are. Flexibility in life means being open-minded, willing to embrace change, and able to find solutions when things don’t go as planned. It’s about adjusting our perspective and approach to fit new circumstances.

Both in dance and in life, flexibility fosters resilience, creativity, and personal growth. Being flexible allows us to flow in life with the ups and downs, turning obstacles into opportunities for growth.
