Mycetoma Research Centre

Mycetoma Research Centre MRC was established in 1991 under the umbrella of the University of Khartoum.

It was set up at Soba University Hospital to provide an integrated high quality medical care for Mycetoma patients Research Programmes

The research programmes and projects carried out in the Center are of a multi-disciplinary approach focusing on basic research into the causes and progression of Mycetoma, the translation of new knowledge and technology into novel treatments and the provision of state-of-the-art patient care. Health Education & Community Development

Staff members organized many field trips to various Mycetoma endemic areas where patients were seen and treated and public health education was conducted. Organisation of Scientific Meetings

MRC organized many conferences, seminars and meetings; the aim of these was to act as media through which medical and health members and scientists interested in Mycetoma could maintain contact. They were also intended to be a forum for informal discussion, for exchanging and updating of knowledge and experience, for maintaining continuous medical education in Mycetoma and for providing advice and recommendations to concerned authorities. MRC Staff:

The staff members are of medical, health and science backgrounds; they are interested in all facets related to Mycetoma and have good track records in patients’ management, teaching, research and community development. Through clinical and basic research, the staff of the center has continually explored new approaches to patients’ management.

Dama Project Annual Meeting – Cairo, November 2025

We were delighted to hold the Dama Project Annual Meeting in Cairo on November 22–23, 2025. The gathering brought together project partners to review achievements, discuss progress, and plan the next steps for strengthening data systems that support mycetoma research.

The Dama Project (Data Analytics for Mycetoma Research Centre) is a collaboration between the Mycetoma Research Centre (MRC) in Khartoum, the Comboni College of Science and Technology (CCST), and the Institute of Reliable Embedded Systems and Communication Electronics (ivESK) at Offenburg University of Applied Sciences in Germany.
Through this partnership, the project is establishing a solid foundation in database management and data preprocessing. This work will support future analysis of data from more than 12,000 mycetoma patients treated at the MRC over the past 30 years—an important step toward improving understanding, diagnosis, and treatment.

Funding is provided by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with support from the German Federal Foreign Office under the Ta’ziz Short-Term Measures program.

This collaboration highlights the power of international partnerships in advancing research, innovation, and capacity-building in the fight against mycetoma
