05.01.25: 小寒XiaoHan (Minor Cold). We are now approaching the coldest time of the year. There is frost and snow and the cold wind is fierce. 瑞雪兆丰年 (Ruì xuě zhào fēng nián) –Timely snow promises a good harvest in the year to come. Despite the intense cold, Yang Qi will soon be BIRTHED and people start to get excited in preparation for the spring festival festivities. It is the month of LaYue, when people make delicious specialities including LaMei and Laba porridge. 开门红🧧

Today we celebrate Laba festival. It falls on the 8th day of the 12th Lunar month and is a time to pray for good harvests for the new year. On this day the family eats Laba congee together (glutinous rice porridge mixed with red beans, millet, Chinese sorghum, peas, dried lotus seeds, dried dates, chestnuts and walnuts). During this time, we transition between Winter and Spring (which starts in less than a month from now), and the transition times are associated with the Soil/Earth phase – thus supporting the Spleen and Stomach is very important. Heavy and oily meat dishes, spicy food and alcohol should be consumed in moderation and tonics should only be taken by those with deficiencies. Laba porridge helps enrich yin and yang, qi and blood.

In the body, we follow all the previous recommendations to store Qi and protect Yang, such that it may grow and expand.

I have now completed a year of seasonal cycles (24 nodes) and I have to say that I am a little tired of this topic. I hope you all enjoyed this series. I’ll let you know if I review it in the future.

Wishing you all a great 2025!

21.12.24: DongZhi (Winter Solstice). We have arrived at the shortest day and longest night in the year. Now the shadows are the longest in the northern hemisphere and the real cold is here. This is a very important time of the year for many cultures. From the point of greatest darkness, comes the beginning of light. Yang Qi will start to grow. What new hopes and dreams are waiting to grow? As the darkness ends, let us let go of everything that has held us back this year.

Now is the time to stop, rest, worship ancestors (get your altar ready), reconnect with family, eat nourishing foods and prepare for new growth in the coming year. In China dumplings / wonton are eaten to help the Yang Qi grow. While round glutinous rice balls are served to celebrate the uniting of families. ‘If people eat lamb meat on the winter solstice, they will be warm the whole winter long’.

In the body, we follow all the previous recommendations to store Qi and protect Yang, such that it may grow and expand. Practices that help us support Yin and protect the emerging Yang include avoiding over-stimulation; taking tonics and high calorie foods; eating warming meats, soups and stews; taking care not to over-eat or eat / drink cold; drinking enough warm water; paying attention not to over-consume salt, spicy foods and alcohol; dressing appropriately outdoors and indoors; sleeping early and waking with the sun; engaging in mild exercise on sunny days (not sweating too much) and keeping the emotions stable and the spirit calm. Dark nights allow us to find our inner light and build inner strength.

The cold is strong and those that are Yang deficient suffer easily with cold hands and feet, joint pains, Lung issues and fatigue. It is important to limit cold exposure, dress well and do frequent moxibustion on the back and soak the feet. Although, we may feel the urge to sleep more, sleeping more than 10 hours a day makes the frail Yang Qi sluggish. This is similar with inactivity. It is advised to incorporate mild exercise into one’s routine. Fresh and ventilated air is vital. Despite these cold temperatures, it is important to realise that modern heating systems may also cause problems of heat or dryness in the body.

Ritual: Many customs light a candle and keep it going for several days during this dark period. It symbolises the reminder that light will eventually return. The Yule candle is placed in a window for passserbys to see and to spread goodwill and seasonal cheer. There are certain rules on how the candle should be extinguished, such as not to bring bad luck.

I wish you all restful and enriching festivities 🙏🏽 🌲💫

Menopaus 6. Why is then menopause such a fuss?
Well, one way to explain our body situation at menopause would be by applying the Traditional Chinese Medicine’s concept of the Kidney. We can picture the TCM Kidneys (including the reproductive cycle and bodily hormonal balance) as the foundation of our house. A stable and balanced release of hormones helps to keep this base of the house both firm, sufficient and supportive of all the structures and roomsabove. These rooms are like the body’s major organ systems -the heart its cardiovascular system, our stomach and gut, the liver function and the respiratory tract…

As there in perimenopause is this sudden drop (or rollercoaster) of reproductive hormones, women’s housefoundation gets frail and wobbly. Personally, many rooms in my house had to be renovated and looked over. Actually, my whole house was suddenly unstable and sensitive to any gust of wind from outside or when there was an extreme weather condition. Chinese medicine can help explain all these seemingly random symptoms surfacing - including gut sensitivity, migraines, brainfog, joint pains, stiff and painful tissues, anxiety, palpitations so forth.

Menopaus 5. The golden age. I have passed the golden ribbon, ran right through it. I am not fertile anymore and honestly feel like a different woman.
Maybe that is a blessing - to be able to transform, transmorph, in this one life so that you participate from another angle? 😘
