Today is Blue Monday . The third Monday in January is traditionally said to be the most depressing day of the year , as people often have faltered in their New Year's resolutions by now , are sometimes short of money after overspending at Christmas , January payday has still not arrived ,and in the Northern hemisphere the weather can be cold and grey .
This time of year is when it's important to follow Kristin Neff's advice and apply self compassion . Try to develop a kind inner voice , realise that we are all fallible humans usually trying our best , and look mindfully for small pleasures in our daily lives . Remember for example that the Winter Solstice has passed , and the days are already getting lighter . Spring is on its way !

A friend of mine says she always feels a bit low at the summer solstice in June, because it signifies that from then on, the days will be shorter. While that might be a dramatic reaction, it’s true that shorter days can affect our mood. Here are three preventative measures you can take today to help stave off seasonal depression:
1️⃣ Take your vitamins.
Vitamin D is involved in the production of serotonin, one of the neurotransmitters responsible for wellbeing. Experts say that we in Sweden should be taking a daily supplement of vitamin D from mid September. We can also get Vitamin D the natural way, by taking a daily walk outside, even when its cloudy.
2️⃣ Get out your diary.
Start studding the winter months with fun activities you can look forward to. Gothenburg has two major musicals this winter (Miss Saigon at the Opera and Moulin Rouge at Rondo). “Lights in Alingsås” is an interesting free exhibition of light installations dotted throughout the town in October. If your funds permit, a quick break to somewhere sunny will boost your mood. Go to (or arrange) get togethers with friends, or cinema trips. Social connection is helpful during the dark months.
3️⃣ Embrace “Hygge”
The Danish concept of hygge means something like cozy and is especially appealing in the darker months. Now is the time to get out your candle holders, fluffy blankets and comfy jumpers. Find the books you want to read, put the video of a roaring fire on the telly, make a large mug of hot chocolate and make your home a cozy nest to enjoy when it’s cold outside.
Small changes can help us feel brighter. If you feel that therapy might also help, don't hesitate to contact me on glen@glenbryan.co.uk to arrange some sessions .
