Studies show that 90% of blood samples from PIVCs have a sufficiently good test result (ref: 1,2,3,4). Hemolysis is the most common objection for collecting blood via a PIVC. The potential delay in diagnosis and treatment of the few (1 of 10) patients who may need a second venepuncture due to haemolyzed blood should be weight against the potential for delay of care in the many (9 of 10) patients who do not require a second venepuncture (ref: 3).

Not all PIVCs include sample blood as an indication for use. To avoid off label or so-called misuse of the device it is important to know that the product you are using is protected for all relevant procedures in the IFU.

Collecting blood samples via a PIVC can reduce the number of venepunctures and save patients from more bad experiences than necessary. Drawing blood for analysis is one of the most common procedures during a patiens hospital stay. At the same time 6 of 10 patients have at least one PIVC inserted (ref) meaning most patiens are exposed to multiple needle stick or venepunctures.

Here are some helpful things to consider when performing venipuncture in elderly patients:

• Use as small catheters as possible
• Apply only light pressure if using a tourniquet, to reduce the risk
that the vein bursts
• Be gentle, thus avoiding bruising or skin tears
• Remember that the depth of the vein is often shallow in relation to
the skin surface, in those cases use a more flat insertion angle
• Stabilize the vein below the insertion site in order to make it more
stable
• Allow plenty of time and insert slowly and steadily

As we get older, our blood vessels age with us. They lose their elasticity over time and they eventually become stiff and less resilient. Fragile veins are at high risk of multiple IV insertion attempts which in turn can cause pain and bruises.

It’s important to be gentle and perform a slow and steady insertion. A sharp needle, small gauge sizes and an instant blood response makes for an IV catheter that excels when veins are thin, and margins are small.
