Dorian Yates on Why Phones Don’t Belong in the Gym
Dorian Yates has strong words for one of the most common modern gym habits: checking your phone. To him, it’s the worst thing you can do during a workout. We’re already connected to our phones all day, he says, so the gym should be the one place where you disconnect and fully focus on yourself.
Yates argues that weight training doesn’t take much time — maybe an hour a day, or just a few hours a week — and that time should be treated as sacred. Leaving your phone in your bag isn’t just good for your training; it’s good for your mind. He views the gym as a form of meditation, a break from everything else: relationships, work, bills, stress.
Deep focus allows you to feel every rep, every stretch and contraction, and push out those extra one or two reps that make all the difference. But if your mind is on your phone, you’ll never reach that level of intensity.
For Yates, being “in the zone” is what separates real progress from wasted effort — and your phone is the first thing that pulls you out of it.
