💊 Doctors: Prolonged use of medication for heartburn can be risky!
Over 1 million Swedes take proton pump inhibitors (such as Omeprazole) for heartburn and reflux. Far too few are aware of the risks, doctors tell Dagens Nyheter, Sweden.
These medications can lead to deficiencies in vitamin B12, iron, and calcium, which in turn increases the risk of osteoporosis, bone fractures, intestinal infections, and pneumonia. Plus, they might mess with your body's ability to absorb other meds!
⚠️ Short term fix: Over-the-counter medications for heartburn should be used for a maximum of 2 weeks, according to the package leaflets. Despite being available without a prescription, pharmacies should provide more information about this upon purchase, according to the doctors.
