🌟 "Replacing What’s Lost – Cell Replacement Therapy for Parkinson’s Disease" 🧠

In this captivating image from our 2024 Image Competition, researchers Edoardo Sossi and Alessandro Fiorenzano from the Laboratory of Developmental and Restorative Neurobiology showcase the potential of cell replacement therapy for Parkinson’s Disease.

The neural connections highlighted in red and white in the image are from stem cell-derived, dopamine-producing neurons that have been transplanted into a model of the disease. This groundbreaking work offers future hope for restoring cells that have been lost to the disease.

🧠 "Bed Head, in the Head"

Congratulations to Yu-Ping Shen, a doctoral student in the Laboratory of Stem Cells and Restorative Neurology at Lund Stem Cell Center, for capturing the top image in our 2024 competition!

This fascinating MRI image reveals a bundle of nerve fibers in the rat brain. The tangled fibers on the right side resemble 'bed head' hair, illustrating the effects of stroke.

As researchers work to 'comb' through these pathways, this advanced imaging technique promises to uncover new insights into how stroke impacts the brain.

🎓🩸 Earlier this year, Dr. Anna Konturek-Ciesla successfully defended her doctoral thesis titled “Aging Hematopoiesis: Functional Insights and Prospects for Rejuvenation.”

Driven by a passion for improving human health, Anna’s research focused on understanding blood cell development (known as ) during the aging process.

Over the past four years, Anna investigated the mechanisms behind age-related decline in the hematopoietic system, exploring interventions like stem cell transplantation for blood rejuvenation. Now a postdoctoral researcher at ETH Zürich, Anna’s journey within academia and passion for scientific discovery continues.

Lund University. What have your Ph.D. studies focused on?“My thesis work focused on studying the biology of the hematopoietic (blood) system during normal aging. In particular, I examined the function of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), the source of mature blood cells, how it changes with age, an...

Grattis, Ella! 👏
