Lymphedema is a chronic condition that can cause severe suffering.

The risk of developing lymphedema after cancer surgery is significant, with complications often emerging within a year of treatment completion or even later.
Lymphedema occurs when the transport function in the lymphatic vessels deteriorates, leading to the accumulation of lymph fluid in the tissue. The swelling initially consists only of lymph fluid, and adequate compression treatment can often suffice.
Without treatment or with inadequate compression, the edema becomes irreversible, and the lymph fluid turns into fatty tissue.

Despite numerous treatment offerings, once the edema becomes irreversible, there are limited options for effective management.
• Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) may provide short-term symptom relief but lacks evidence of long-term effectiveness.
• Surgical options like Lymphaticovenular Anastomosis (LVA) and Vascularized Lymph Node Transfer (VLNT) are often suggested but show minimal success.

Dr. Håkan Brorson's 30 years of research into treating lymphedema with liposuction and well-fitting, lifelong compression demonstrate a viable solution. Liposuction, a straightforward procedure, requires one year of follow-up to ensure proper compression fitting. After this year, a stable condition is generally achieved, but lifelong compression therapy remains essential for managing lymphedema.

Many surgeons promise that LVA and VLNT will be effective, and visible results post-surgery are often due to concurrent liposuction. If compression is not continuously adjusted post-surgery, the initial improvements can quickly revert.

The broader question remains: Why are LVA and VLNT performed at all? Dr. Brorson has dedicated nearly three decades of his career to discourage these procedures globally. The lack of financial incentives for liposuction, often viewed merely as a cosmetic procedure, remains a significant concern.

🌟Our Approach to Lymphedema Treatment 🌟
Understanding the right treatment for lymphedema is crucial. Here’s a breakdown of why and when liposuction, combined with compression therapy, might be the best course of action:
✨ Effective Management: Liposuction is advised only for non-pitting lymphedema—where conservative treatments like CCT have failed to significantly reduce limb volume. This condition, often resulting from accumulated adipose rather than lymph fluid, doesn't respond well to simple drainage since it involves solid fat deposits.
🔍 Strategic Treatment: The primary goal is converting pitting edema (where the skin indents under pressure) to a non-pitting state through CCT before considering liposuction. This ensures that the swelling is due primarily to fat tissue, which can be effectively removed via liposuction.
💡 Long-term Success: Studies and clinical practice show that liposuction for lymphedema not only reduces excess volume but also improves the quality of life. Continuous use of compression garments post-procedure is vital to prevent recurrence and maintain treatment effects.
🌐 Global Recognition: Several international teams have reported similar positive outcomes, affirming this approach as a leading treatment for chronic lymphedema globally.
Our aim is to bridge the gap between conservative and surgical treatments, offering patients a sustained solution to a challenging condition.

🌟 What You Need to Know About Lipedema 🌟
Lipedema is a condition often first noticed during puberty or after pregnancy. It involves an increase in the size of fat cells, particularly around the hips, thighs, buttocks, and arms.
Typical Symptoms:
A feeling of heaviness and pain in the skin and fat tissue.
Tenderness even with slight pressure.
A tendency to bruise easily and accumulate fat in specific areas like the calves.
Although lipedema is often mistaken for common obesity, it differs due to its symmetrical fat distribution and associated pain. It's also important not to confuse lipedema with lymphedema, which involves an increased amount of lymph fluid in the tissue.
Treatments such as liposuction can significantly reduce discomfort and improve quality of life by reducing the number of fat cells

⭐️Compression therapy is a key component in managing lymphedema⭐️

Compression helps to reduce fluid accumulation and improve lymph flow, but it does not address the underlying damage to the lymphatic system.

While compression can help to reduce swelling and prevent further buildup of lymphatic fluid, its effects are generally temporary. Once compression garments are removed, worn out or not properly fitted, fluid can start to accumulate again unless additional measures are employed.

Lymphedema can progress over time if not adequately managed. Advanced stages of lymphedema are harder to treat with compression alone, as the tissues may become fibrotic, making it difficult for compression to effectively move fluid out of the affected area.

For some individuals, wearing compression garments can be uncomfortable, especially in hot weather or for long durations. This discomfort can lead to poor compliance with wearing the garments as prescribed, which diminishes their effectiveness.

Our treatment is effective when you have used your compression over time. When you don't have any pitting edema and when your affected limb is hard and heavy.

Do you have pitting edema?🫵🏻

Our lymphedema treatment with compression and liposuction is very effective on non-pitting lymphedema, where the lymph fluid has turned to fatty tissue in the limbs.

Pitting edema is assessed through a simple physical examination known as the "pitting test." This test measures the presence and severity of edema based on how the skin responds to pressure. Here’s how you typically measure for pitting edema:
Choose the Area: Select an area of the body where swelling is visible, such as the lower legs, ankles, feet, or arms.
Apply Pressure: Use your thumb or a finger to press firmly into the swollen skin, typically for about 5 seconds. Ensure the pressure is sufficient and evenly applied.
Release Pressure: After pressing, release the pressure and observe the area.
Assess the Indentation: Look for an indentation in the skin where you pressed. The depth and duration of the indentation indicate the presence and degree of pitting edema. The indentation typically stays for a few seconds before the skin slowly returns to its swollen state.
If you have pitting, more than 6 mm you will need to continue with your compression and make sure that it is firm and well fitted. Once the pitting is less then 6 mm, your might be ready for our treatment. Reach out!

🌟 Groundbreaking Study on Lymphedema Treatment! 🌟

Arm lymphedema is a challenging complication many face post-breast cancer surgery, significantly affecting quality of life. Our latest research highlights a powerful solution: liposuction combined with controlled compression therapy (CCT).

🔍 Study Insights:

The study from 2015 tracked 105 women with non-pitting edema from 1993 to 2012.
Results show an astounding mean volume reduction of 117% in treated limbs, maintained five years post-surgery, confirming the effectiveness of this approach.

💡 Conclusion:
Liposuction, when used alongside CCT, not only reduces arm volume but effectively maintains these results over a five-year span, offering a significant improvement in both physiological and psychological well-being for patients.

This approach stands as the only treatment providing complete and sustained reduction of lymphedema volume, promising a better quality of life for those affected.
