Fredagen den 1 mars är det Internationella Rullstolsdagen 👨‍🦽

Wellspect är med när FIFH Malmö uppmärksammar dagen med en minimässa i FIFH-hallen i Malmö.

Det blir intressanta utställare, underhållning och information om bland annat arbetet med Rullstolsakademin.

Kom förbi och se våra blås- och tarmprodukter samt andra hjälpmedel och broschyrer som kan vara till nytta för dig!

IWD24. Fokus Rullstol!
Häng med när FIFH uppmärksammar ”International Wheelchair Day” fredagen den 1/3 kl. 12-15. På plats bjuder vi på en minimässa med intressanta utställare och det senaste inom rullstolar. Lägg därtill föreläsningar med Sofia Dettmann, ryggmärgsskadad, leg läkare och paralympisk medaljör samt Henrik Larsson som informerar om arbetet med Rullstolsakademien. Därutöver kommer trubadurerna William Hedendahl och Salomon Jacobsson underhålla på scenen.

Nobina besöker International Day med en stadsbuss, testa hur det fungerar att rulla på och av en buss. På FIFH-Hallen finns det dessutom goda möjligheter till fika, du måste givetvis testa våfflorna! Fritt inträde!

Bakgrund
Internationella rullstolsdagen är alltid den 1 mars och är en årlig dag med evenemang och aktiviteter som äger rum runt om i världen när rullstolsanvändare firar den positiva inverkan en rullstol har på livet.

Sedan den första gången lanserades 2008 har firandet ägt rum i Australien, Nepal, Senegal, Sydafrika, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Storbritannien och USA.

30th of May we celebrate world MS day.

It’s estimated that over 2.3 million individuals are living with MS and its complications worldwide. Today we honor the strength and resilience of those individuals.

MS can cause a wide range of symptoms, and even though there is no cure for MS at the moment, there are a lot of treatments that can manage symptoms, slow down disease progression and improve the quality of life from those suffering.

Constipation and/or bowel leakage may be one of the first presenting symptoms of MS.

Merel Gerssen was born with , a birth defect which occurs when the spine and spinal cord don't form properly. One of the consequences is that she has impaired bladder and bowel function which causes her to suffer from constipation and urinary incontinence. We spoke to her about how she manages her life with the help of Navina Smart and LoFric Elle:

"Because I have constipation, I have to perform bowel irrigation. Earlier I used a manual system, but for the past 8 years, I have been using Navina Smart. It took me about 8 weeks to get fully adjusted to the therapy – but it truly gave me great relief. Thanks to bowel irrigation, I can plan my defecations – instead of them happening to me. I can decide when I want to go to the toilet.
I also use catheters to empty my bladder. I use LoFric Elle and I am very happy with it – the packaging is small and it’s therefore easy to bring with you.

In the beginning, I found it especially difficult to talk about my issues, but once you've done it enough times, you get used to it. I've noticed that once you’ve brought it up, it's no longer an issue.
I now take my Navina Smart everywhere: to friends, family, on vacation and on weekends away. When we go camping with the family, I put a note on the door of the toilet that says “occupied for medical reasons” to prevent people from knocking. Then I can just sit quietly, and the bowel irrigation works smoothly. Being in an environment without stress really helps the procedure.
..and you don't have to just sit there doing nothing while you’re at it! I often practice singing for my choir sessions, which has a positive effect on bowel movements. Or I read an e-book."

Today we highlight and want to thank all of our nurses for the amazing work they do for our users and our communities.

We asked Liz Hamlet, one of our Continence Nurse Specialists for Wellspect UK, about her favorite parts of her job on the Wellspect UK Nurse Team:

The best part of my job is making a real difference to the people I see. As a Continence Nurse Specialist, I connect with people on such an intimate level and often meet under difficult circumstances that some may feel embarrassed or ashamed about. It’s a real privilege going into people’s homes, educating, supporting, and empowering them to make informed decisions that will improve their bladder and bowel health and increase their quality of life and in many cases, the outcome can be life changing for them.

Compassion, empathy, and good communication is key to create trusting relationships and having the autonomy and time to spend with them to explain about products and how to use them, is fundamental to good outcomes and satisfaction on behalf of them and myself, making my job extremely rewarding in so many ways. Sometimes, it's the little things that you do for someone that has the biggest impact.

Nurses play a crucial role in our business and to the users of our products. We are so grateful for Liz, and all of our Wellspect Nurse Teams, for the support, expertise and understanding they bring to their role every single day.

Navigating life as a child with a hidden disability: Harry’s journey

When he first discovered Navina Smart, he was going to give it a year, knowing it’s a therapy that demands time and patience. But already after a month he found it gave him a totally new independence. Harry, 11, was born with various birth defects, and had to use stoma followed by enemas and medication to facilitate bowel movements - until he discovered Navina Smart. Now he uses it every day, and his family appreciates his new sense of freedom.

For World Toilet Day, initiated by the United Nations, we would like to highlight the importance of going to the toilet when need arises, and the importance of accessible public toilets available to all.

A recent survey in Sweden focusing on the tabu of talking about, and fear of pooping in public toilets, showed that more than half of the respondents admitted to avoiding going to toilet outside their own home.

Stool withholding can result in painful bowel movements, constipation, f***l impaction and if repeated over long periods of time can cause a megarectum, with symptoms of f***l incontinence overflow, decreased re**al sensation and, in the end, an impaired sensation and urge to defecate.
